Widanapathirana's Lone Hand Not Enough as Sonning 3rds Crumble to Heavy Defeat

Sonning 3rd XI were left to rue a dismal batting collapse and a devastating third-wicket partnership as Hampstead Norreys chased down 122 with eight wickets in hand and in just 12.1 overs at Knowl Hill on Saturday in Division 7A.

Asked to bat first after Hampstead Norreys won the toss and elected to field, Sonning found themselves in immediate trouble. Opener Aseem Shafi was run out for 3, and captain Arun Kumar Pera followed soon after for 15, caught off Vishwanath Timmanagoudar. Kyle Dellar-Law struck a brisk 9 from 6 balls with two boundaries, but his dismissal, bowled by Ankush Jain, left Sonning 30 for 3. When Rahul Sood was caught off Vinoth Palanisamy for 11, the hosts had slumped to 47 for 4 with the innings in desperate need of a rescue act.

What followed was a catastrophic middle-order collapse. Paul Towner, Akash Vasa, and Ravi Kumar managed just 2 runs between them, all departing in quick succession as Naykesh Kolpe and Palanisamy tore through the line-up. At 54 for 7, Sonning were staring down the barrel of an embarrassingly low total.

Shamitha Widanapathirana, who had entered at number five and watched the carnage unfold from the other end, then produced the innings of the day. He found a willing partner in wicketkeeper Ollie Terry, and the pair added 40 for the eighth wicket, with Terry contributing a patient 8 from 30 balls while Widanapathirana moved through the gears. After Terry was bowled by Param Palanisamy, Ethan Towner provided further support with a punchy 14 that included a six, their ninth-wicket stand adding another 24. Widanapathirana finished unbeaten on 44 from 77 deliveries, striking seven fours in an innings of considerable composure and skill, though it ultimately proved insufficient as Sonning were bowled out for 121 in 37.5 overs.

Hampstead Norreys' bowling attack shared the spoils effectively, with Ankush Jain claiming 2 for 16 from his 6.5 overs, while Palanisamy returned 2 for 10 and Kolpe took 2 for 28. Param Palanisamy's economical 1 for 25 from eight overs also applied consistent pressure through the middle period.

The chase was a mismatch from the outset. Though Sonning struck early — Ethan Towner having Philbert Mathew caught by Shahbaz Ali for 1, and Terry trapping Bharathi Babu lbw for 6 to reduce the visitors to 15 for 2 — what followed was an onslaught. Amanpreet Singh and Keerthi Ramegowda put on an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 109 that obliterated any hopes of a Sonning comeback. Singh was particularly brutal, smashing an unbeaten 54 from just 31 balls with three fours and five sixes, while Ramegowda was scarcely less destructive with 52 not out from 36 deliveries, lacing six fours and three sixes.

Sonning's bowlers had no answer. The ball disappeared to all parts of the ground as the target was overhauled in barely a dozen overs, with Terry's figures of 1 for 45 from five overs and Towner's 1 for 28 from two reflecting the punishment handed out. Akash Vasa's solitary maiden over was the only moment of respite in a chastening afternoon.

It was a defeat that will sting, with Widanapathirana's excellent unbeaten knock deserving of a far better result. The 3rd XI picked up just two bonus points from the fixture, while Hampstead Norreys collected the full 22 league points in emphatic fashion.
