Match Report

Spartans Post Commanding 54-Run Victory Over Holyport

Sonning U11 Spartans delivered a dominant all-round display at Reading Blue Coat School on 5th July, defeating Holyport by 54 runs in the BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) Central league fixture. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Spartans posted an imposing 177 for 3 from their 20 overs before restricting the visitors to 123 for 6 in reply.

Oliver Baker was the standout performer with the bat, smashing an aggressive 28 from just 16 balls, an innings laced with six boundaries that demonstrated superb timing and shot selection. Baker's striking was particularly punishing against Akiv Narayana, whose two overs disappeared for 30 runs as the Spartans middle order capitalised on anything loose.

Zain Baloch set the tone at the top of the order with an enterprising 26 off 15 deliveries, finding the boundary four times to give Sonning early momentum. Captain Seve Horton contributed a handy 10 from eight balls, while Jessica Hawkins added 10 from 11 deliveries with two fours to keep the scoreboard ticking along nicely through the middle overs.

Extras played a significant role in inflating the Spartans' total, with 68 runs coming from sundries — including 40 wides — as Holyport's bowlers struggled for accuracy. Kush Malhotra conceded 11 wides in his two-over spell, while Laurence Knox-Hall sent down nine. George Baker was the pick of the Holyport attack, claiming 2 for 10 from his two overs to provide some resistance.

In reply, Holyport never looked likely to chase down the target. Sonning's bowling was disciplined from the outset, with Zain Baloch proving just as effective with the ball as he had been with the bat. His miserly spell of 3-1-6-2, including a maiden over, was the cornerstone of the Spartans' defensive effort and kept the opposition firmly on the back foot during the crucial early overs.

Jessica Hawkins was equally impressive, bowling three overs for just 13 runs with a maiden of her own, applying sustained pressure from the other end. Oliver Baker chipped in with 1 for 14 from his two overs to complete a fine individual double.

George Baker offered the strongest resistance for Holyport with a spirited 20 off 14 balls, striking four boundaries, while Jaan Malhotra contributed 13 from 12 deliveries. However, with wickets falling at regular intervals — six in total — and 46 extras unable to bridge the gap, the visitors always had too much ground to make up. The Spartans' comprehensive victory earned them a full 20 league points and underlined their credentials in this season's competition.
