Stingers Fall Short as Peppard Stoke Row Claim Victory at The Oratory School

Sonning U11 Stingers suffered defeat in their BYCL Girls U11 Challenge fixture on 30th June, going down to Peppard Stoke Row at The Oratory School in a match where extras dominated both scorecards in this pairs format encounter.

Peppard Stoke Row won the toss and chose to bat first, posting 121 for 8 from their 16 overs. Eva Russell led the way at the top of the order with a confident 15 off 18 balls, striking three boundaries to set the tone early. Sable Green provided solid support with 12 off 15 deliveries, finding the rope twice, while Sylvie Fooks contributed a steady 9 from 17 balls lower down the order.

The Stingers' bowling attack found the going tough, with extras contributing a staggering 91 runs to the Peppard total. Megan Symes produced the most economical spell for Sonning, conceding just 6 runs from her two overs, while Mia Ho was the pick of the wicket-takers, claiming 1 for 9 from her two overs with tidy figures. Captain Ruby Cross also chipped in with a wicket, returning 1 for 13, and both Reeva Desai (1-13) and Chloe Dawes (1-11) struck to give the Stingers four dismissals in total.

In reply, the Stingers' batting order struggled to build any meaningful momentum, managing only 21 runs from the bat across the entire innings. While extras totalled a remarkable 122 — even more than Peppard had received — the Sonning batters could not capitalise sufficiently, finishing on 103 for 5 from their 16 overs.

Chloe Dawes was the standout performer with the bat for Sonning, top-scoring with 9 off 17 balls in a patient innings at number seven. Reeva Desai opened and made 4, while captain Ruby Cross added 3 at number five. Megan Symes and Eshaal Ahmed both endured difficult spells at the crease, unable to trouble the scorers from 12 and 14 balls respectively.

Eva Russell proved influential with the ball as well as the bat for Peppard Stoke Row, taking 2 for 9 from her two overs to apply early pressure on the Stingers' top order. Captain Penny Blaker and Maisie Thompson each claimed a wicket apiece, while the remaining Peppard bowlers kept things tight enough despite conceding freely in extras.

The 18-run deficit ultimately proved too great for the Stingers to overcome, with the inability to score freely off the bat proving the decisive factor. Despite a committed effort in the field where four wickets were shared around, Sonning's batters were unable to find the boundary even once during their innings, leaving the side reliant on extras that, while plentiful, were not quite enough to overhaul Peppard Stoke Row's total.
