Match Report
Kestrels Fall Short as Falcons Soar in Sonning Intra-Club Derby
The U9 Kestrels suffered defeat at the hands of the U9 Falcons in a friendly pairs match at King George's Field on 26th June 2024, with the Falcons chasing down the Kestrels' total of 97 to finish on 123 for seven from their 16 overs.
Captain Kiyaan Gupta won the toss and elected to bat first on the top pitch, but the Kestrels' innings was a tale of two halves. Elijah Patterson top-scored with a brisk 13 off just nine balls, striking a boundary and clearing the rope for a six to give the innings some early impetus. Vivaan Ramesh also contributed with a confident 11 off 11 balls, including two fours, while Freddie Jansen added a useful 8 off 13 deliveries with one boundary of his own.
The Kestrels' total was significantly bolstered by 84 extras, including 35 in penalty runs, 24 wides and 16 no-balls, as the Falcons' bowling attack struggled for consistency. Edward Heath was the pick of the Falcons' bowlers, claiming two wickets for 15 runs from his two overs, while Aryaansh Rawat delivered an impressively disciplined spell of 2-0-4-0, including a maiden over — a rare feat at this age group.
In reply, the Falcons' batting proved more productive across the board. Jonathan Turner led the charge with 14 off 11 balls, striking two fours, while Oscar Williams contributed 11 off 13 with a boundary. Seve Horton added 9, and Aryaansh Rawat chipped in with 8, giving the Falcons a broader base of contributions than the Kestrels had managed.
The Kestrels' bowlers fought hard to contain the chase but were undermined by their own extras tally, which reached 92 — including 30 wides, 27 byes and 25 in penalty runs. Hanish Veluru was the standout performer with the ball for the Kestrels, returning impressive figures of 2-0-7-2, making him the most economical and most threatening bowler on either side. Kiyaan Gupta and Elijah Patterson each claimed a wicket apiece, while Freddie Jansen also picked up a scalp, though at a cost of 17 runs from his two overs.
Despite taking seven wickets — two more than the Falcons managed — the Kestrels were unable to stem the flow of runs. Vivaan Ramesh bowled tidily at the top, conceding just seven from his two overs, but the lack of sustained pressure elsewhere allowed the Falcons to build their lead steadily throughout the innings.
The 26-run margin ultimately reflected the Falcons' superior discipline with the bat and their ability to rotate the strike more effectively, with six of their eight batters reaching at least four runs compared to five for the Kestrels. For the Kestrels, Patterson's explosive cameo with the bat and Veluru's incisive bowling were the clear highlights in an otherwise frustrating evening at King George's Field.
