Match Report

Scorchers' Late Rally Falls Short as Goring Chase Down 111 with Ease

Sonning U13 Scorchers suffered defeat at Gardiner Recreation Ground on Thursday evening, bowled out for 110 before Goring overhauled their target with five overs to spare in this U13 League Pool 8 fixture.

Captain Arnav Duvvuri won the toss and elected to bat, but the Scorchers found themselves in immediate trouble against Goring's opening attack. Rafe Rughani removed both openers inside the first few overs, trapping Muhammad Shah bowled for 2 and having Joseph Dowse caught by wicketkeeper Henry Bowers for a duck. Duvvuri counter-attacked with an aggressive 12 from just six balls, striking a four and a six, but his dismissal — caught by Elliott Rhind off Harry Simpson — left Sonning 30 for 3 and in need of consolidation.

That consolidation never arrived. Instead, the middle order crumbled alarmingly as Samuel James ripped through the batting, finishing with outstanding figures of 3 for 9 from 2.4 overs. Shubh Vedalankar (5), Siddharth Kumar (1) and eventually the dangerous Eshan Wang Kumar all fell to James, while Namit Desai was run out by Joseph Dineen without scoring. At 48 for 8, the Scorchers' innings appeared destined for an embarrassingly low total.

What followed was a remarkable rearguard action. Eshan Wang Kumar, batting at number 11, produced an extraordinary knock of 26 from 21 balls, lacing four boundaries and clearing the rope once. Together with Mitul Kalidindi, who occupied the crease doggedly for 23 balls while contributing 2 not out, the pair added 43 for the last wicket to drag Sonning to a more respectable 110 all out in 19.4 overs. Suvir Jaryal had earlier contributed a useful 11 from 23 balls, but it was Wang Kumar's counter-attacking innings that gave his side something to bowl at. The extras column also told a story, with 50 extras — including 29 wides — significantly inflating the total.

Duvvuri made an immediate impact with the ball, producing the best bowling figures of the match with 2 for 7 from two overs, including a maiden. He removed both Goring openers, bowling Will Foster for 1 and dismissing Joseph Dineen for 15 to reduce the home side to 25 for 2. For a brief moment, the Scorchers sensed an opportunity.

However, Goring captain Elliott Rhind and Harry Simpson extinguished any remaining hope with commanding displays. Rhind struck five fours in a fluent 31 from 27 balls before retiring not out, while Simpson was even more destructive, smashing five fours and a six in an unbeaten 33 from 26 deliveries. Charlie Goss provided a steady hand at the other end with 10 not out as Goring reached 114 for 2 in just 15 overs. The Scorchers' bowling, aside from Duvvuri's excellent spell, proved expensive, with Namit Desai conceding 20 from his single over and Shubh Vedalankar going for 17 off his solitary over.

Despite the defeat, the Scorchers will take heart from Wang Kumar's remarkable last-wicket heroics with the bat and Duvvuri's incisive new-ball spell, performances that demonstrated both fighting spirit and individual quality even on a difficult evening away from home.
