Match Report

Eagles Outgunned as Peppard Stoke Row's Lower Order Powers Home Side to Comprehensive Victory

Sonning U9 Eagles travelled to Peppard Common on 28 June for their BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league fixture and found themselves on the wrong end of a decisive defeat, with the home side's middle and lower order batsmen proving too potent in the run chase.

Peppard Stoke Row won the toss and inserted the Eagles, who found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined home attack. Captain Mihira Arisetty top-scored for Sonning with 9 runs from 27 balls, showing admirable patience at the crease even as wickets fell around him. Arlo Snarey contributed 7 from 23 deliveries, while Oliver Gomez added 5 runs, including the only boundary of the Eagles innings — a well-struck four. The remaining batsmen struggled for fluency, with Leonardo Camilleri, Finn Prebble, Maurya Chirunamala and Mackie Theron all failing to trouble the scorers.

The Eagles posted 91 from their 20 overs, though it should be noted that 65 of those runs came via extras, with 43 wides and 12 no-balls reflecting the challenges of bowling at this age group. Of the home bowlers, Finlay O'Sullivan was the pick, claiming 2 wickets for just 4 runs from his two overs without conceding a single wide. Zara Dugan also impressed with 2 for 4, while Dexter Nolan bowled tightly, including a maiden, to finish with 1 for 4.

In reply, Peppard Stoke Row's top order made a steady start without pulling away, with Rafe Clark (2), Finlay O'Sullivan (4) and Craig Anderson (1) keeping the scoreboard ticking modestly through the early pairs. Zara Dugan injected some urgency with a bright knock of 14 from 10 balls, striking three fours, while Roy Calvocoressi and Max Gardiner each added 4.

The complexion of the match changed dramatically when Dexter Nolan and the lower-order batsmen came to the crease. Nolan was outstanding, blasting 31 from just 16 balls with five fours and a six, while Barney Frizzell was even more destructive, hammering 34 from 15 deliveries, also striking five fours and clearing the boundary once. Eden Biggs weighed in with a rapid 16 off 8 balls, and Jack Mortimer added an unbeaten 6. The home side's total of 167 was built on 116 runs from the bat — a strong return at this level.

The Eagles bowlers toiled hard in the face of the onslaught. Oliver Gomez was the most economical of the Sonning attack, returning tidy figures of 1 for 6 from his two overs without conceding an extra, while Arlo Snarey also picked up a wicket, finishing with 1 for 5. Veer Srivastava claimed a scalp but proved expensive, going for 32 from his two overs as Peppard's batsmen targeted his bowling. Maurya Chirunamala (0 for 27) and captain Mihira Arisetty (0 for 21) also came in for punishment during the latter stages.

The final margin of 76 runs reflected Peppard Stoke Row's superiority, particularly through the explosive batting of Nolan and Frizzell, whose combined 65 runs from 31 balls effectively put the game beyond Sonning's reach. For the Eagles, the efforts of Gomez with bat and ball and Arisetty's patient innings with the bat were the standout contributions on a difficult afternoon at Peppard Common.
