Scorchers Fall Short Despite Hatchett-Walker's Four-Wicket Haul and Towner's Defiant Knock

Sonning U11 Scorchers suffered defeat away at the McGill Oval on 24 July as Wokingham's U11 Golden Oaks claimed victory in the BYCL Under 11 T20 Blast West. Despite a dominant bowling display that skittled the hosts for 68, the Scorchers were unable to chase down the target, bowled out for 54 in 11 overs.

Wokingham won the toss and elected to bat, but their top order was soon in difficulty. Captain Vivaan Ramesh struck early, bowling Sam Ward for just 1, before Jonathan Turner produced the spell of the innings. Turner's figures of 2-1 from his two overs were outstanding, including a maiden, as he accounted for Joe Mckehon (7) and Muhammad Zaviyar (0), both caught — the former pouched by wicketkeeper Lewis Towner and the latter by Svarup Huggi.

Alexander Hatchett-Walker then tore through the middle and lower order with a devastating spell of 4-8 from two overs, which also included a maiden. He had Ved Iyer caught behind by Towner for 7, bowled Raamish Khalique and Ashvik Goyal, and then took a return catch to dismiss Aarayb Bhatti for a golden duck. At 33 for 7, Wokingham were in deep trouble, and the Scorchers appeared to be heading for a straightforward chase.

However, a crucial 23-run partnership for the eighth wicket between captain Emilia Brand-Smith (1 off 12 balls) and Ashar Asad (6 off 17) provided Wokingham with a vital lifeline, pushing the score from 33 to 56. Though Brand-Smith contributed just a single run, her occupation of the crease allowed the extras — 33 in total, including 19 wides — to inflate the target significantly. Savraj Sall eventually bowled Brand-Smith, while Ranbir Setia cleaned up the tail with two wickets, bowling both Asad and Reyansh Kumar (5) to wrap up the innings at 68 all out in 14.4 overs.

The Scorchers' reply started promisingly. Musa Meer struck a boundary in a brisk 6 off 6 balls before being bowled by Brand-Smith, and Jonathan Turner continued his fine all-round match with a rapid 8 off just 3 balls, crashing two fours. At 22 for 1, the chase appeared well within reach. Then the collapse struck. Turner fell bowled to Brand-Smith, and within moments the score remained stuck on 22 as three wickets tumbled without a run being added. Captain Vivaan Ramesh was run out by Brand-Smith for a duck, Alexander Hatchett-Walker was run out by Raamish Khalique without scoring, and Ridith Kandadi was bowled by Aarayb Bhatti for 6. Savraj Sall followed immediately, caught by Sam Ward off Bhatti, and at 22 for 6 the match had swung decisively in Wokingham's favour.

Lewis Towner provided the one beacon of resistance in the Scorchers' innings, batting through from number six to finish unbeaten on 17 off 21 balls with four boundaries. He attempted to rebuild with each new partner, adding 9 with Seve Horton, 10 with Zain Baloch, and 6 with Ranbir Setia. But wickets continued to fall at the other end as Ashar Asad (2-4 from two overs) and Ved Iyer (2-5 from one over) proved too much for the lower order. Svarup Huggi was the last man out, trapped lbw by Iyer, as the Scorchers were dismissed for 54, falling 14 runs short.

The defeat will sting particularly given the excellence of the Scorchers' bowling effort, with Hatchett-Walker's four wickets and Turner's miserly spell restricting Wokingham to just 35 runs off the bat. Ultimately, 33 extras conceded in the field and a dramatic middle-order collapse with the bat proved the difference on the night.
