Sonning Sunday 1s Overwhelmed as Uxbridge Pile on 313 in Comprehensive Victory
Sonning's Sunday 1s endured a chastening afternoon at King George's Field as Uxbridge romped to a comprehensive victory in this friendly fixture on 19 July 2020. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Uxbridge made full use of the home ground's conditions, amassing an imposing 313 for 4 from their allotted 40 overs before dismissing Sonning for just 45.
The visitors' batting display was ruthless from the outset. Losing only four wickets across the entire innings, Uxbridge's top order dominated proceedings, giving the Sonning bowling attack precious little respite. The run rate of nearly eight an over spoke volumes about the authority with which the visiting batsmen played, finding the boundary with regularity throughout their stay at the crease.
Sonning's bowlers toiled manfully across 40 overs but simply could not stem the flow of runs. Without detailed individual figures available, it was clear that none of the home side's attack was able to gain a sustained foothold in the contest, as Uxbridge's batsmen capitalised on anything loose and rotated the strike with ease.
Faced with a daunting target of 314, Sonning's reply never got off the ground. The innings lasted just 17 overs as wickets fell at regular intervals, the batting order unable to cope with the Uxbridge bowling attack. At no stage did Sonning threaten to mount a meaningful challenge, and the procession of wickets ensured the contest was over well before tea.
Being bowled out for 45 — a margin of defeat of 268 runs — represented a difficult day for the home side. The collapse suggested that Uxbridge's bowlers were equally as dominant as their batsmen, exploiting conditions and putting the Sonning batting lineup under sustained pressure from ball one.
For Uxbridge, it was a near-perfect all-round performance. Their batsmen set up the victory with an enormous first-innings total, and their bowlers completed the job with clinical efficiency, wrapping up the Sonning innings in fewer than half the available overs.
Sonning will reflect on a match in which they were outclassed in every department. On days like these, there are few hiding places, and the Sunday 1s will need to regroup quickly ahead of their next fixture.
