U15 Sharks Chase Down Harpsden with Four Overs to Spare
Sonning U15 Sharks captain Harrison Lott won the toss and inserted Harpsden at Waingels College on Sunday, a decision that proved shrewd as his side chased down 121 in just 16 overs to secure a comfortable victory in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge West.
Harpsden's innings was built around a substantial second-wicket partnership between Jeremy Pickford and Archie Gummer, who both retired not out on 30. Pickford occupied the crease for 54 balls, striking one four during a patient knock, while Gummer was more fluent in his 39-ball innings, finding the boundary twice. The pair added the bulk of the runs in a partnership worth 86 after opener Harry Blackwell had departed for 10, bowled by Oscar Zaum.
Zaum was the pick of the Sonning bowling attack, returning figures of 1-7 from three overs including a maiden — an outstanding spell in a T20 format. Ollie Terry also contributed with the ball, claiming the wicket of Sam Jones and executing a sharp run out to dismiss Kyle Behkishe. Tom Wolfenden bowled Edward Palmer for a duck, while wicketkeeper Lott completed a run out of Shiva Vadhoolan as Harpsden's lower order collapsed spectacularly, losing four wickets for no runs to slip from 113-1 to 113-5. Captain Charlie Cooper steadied things with an unbeaten 14 off 16 balls, but the visitors could manage only 120-5 from their full allocation of 20 overs. Extras contributed 29 to the total, with 25 wides a concern for the Sharks' bowlers.
The Sonning reply began briskly as Lott and Kanishka Suriarachchi put on 25 for the opening stand. Suriarachchi was the aggressor, crashing three fours in a quickfire 16 off just 13 balls before falling lbw to Archie Gummer. Lott continued to anchor the innings, adding a further 23 with Ollie Terry for the second wicket before being dismissed for 19, his innings featuring three well-struck boundaries.
The Sharks wobbled briefly at 51-4 when Terry fell bowled to Sam Jones and Edward Jones was dismissed first ball by the same bowler. Elliot Dawes, however, walked to the crease and immediately took control of the chase. The number four batsman built a crucial partnership of 43 with Neel Kumar, who contributed a steady 10 from 22 balls, the pair calmly eroding the target through intelligent batting.
When Kumar was bowled by Alfred Cary with the score on 94, Tom Wolfenden arrived and injected urgency into the run chase. Wolfenden struck a six and a four in an enterprising 13 off 12 balls, sharing a 25-run stand with Dawes that brought Sonning to the brink of victory. Although Wolfenden fell caught off Harry Blackwell with two runs still needed, the job was essentially done.
Dawes finished unbeaten on 25 off 31 balls, an innings of real maturity punctuated by four boundaries that steered Sonning home with four overs remaining. His composure through the middle overs, arriving with the score at 51-3, was the defining contribution of the match. The Sharks collected the full 20 league points, while Harpsden's extras tally of 33 in the second innings — including 23 wides — ultimately proved costly in a game where discipline with the ball made the difference.
