Zahid's Five-Wicket Haul Spearheads First XI Triumph in Otherwise Bruising Weekend for Sonning

It was a weekend of one shining light amid three league defeats and a Sunday loss for Sonning Cricket Club. Captain Mohammed Zahid produced the standout performance of the weekend, claiming 5-37 to bowl Finchampstead out and set up a comfortable first XI victory in Division 1B. Elsewhere, however, the club's other sides found life tough, with the 2nd XI, 3rd XI and 4th XI all falling to defeats in their respective league matches, while the Sunday 1s went down narrowly at Warfield.

1st XI: Sonning (238-4) beat Finchampstead (233 all out) by 6 wickets — Division 1B (Away)

Sonning's first XI delivered the weekend's marquee result at Finchampstead Park, chasing down 234 with six wickets in hand in a thoroughly professional away display. After Finchampstead won the toss and elected to bat, skipper Mohammed Zahid was the architect of the bowling effort, returning outstanding figures of 5-37 from his ten overs. Three of Finchampstead's top four passed fifty — Tommie Predgen (60), Connor Rees (54) and Matthew Eldridge (59) — and partnerships of 74 for the second wicket and 66 for the fifth threatened to take the game away from Sonning. But Zahid's five-for, supported by Danyal Ghazi (2-57) and Max Murphy (2-37), ensured the hosts were bowled out for 233 in 45 overs. Damario Goodman was characteristically tight, conceding just 31 from his ten overs.

In reply, Sonning's chase was built on a superb opening stand of 96, with Alex Mcloughlin anchoring the innings superbly on his way to a stylish 78 from 106 balls, striking twelve fours. Dhruv Peshkar contributed an assured 43 before being run out, and when Mcloughlin eventually fell stumped, captain Zahid continued his fine day with 32 before Muhammad Ayub took centre stage. Ayub smashed an unbeaten 52 from just 44 deliveries, including three sixes, to carry Sonning home in the 48th over with six wickets still standing. It was a comprehensive all-round team performance that underlined the first XI's credentials in the division.

2nd XI: Wargrave (317-6) beat Sonning (180 all out) by 137 runs — Division 4B (Home)

The 2nd XI were set a mammoth task at King George's Field after Wargrave won the toss and made full use of conditions, posting an imposing 317-6 from their 45 overs. Openers Peter Dean (54) and Luke Taylor (62) put on 118 for the first wicket to lay the foundations, before Louis Dean struck an aggressive 76 featuring six fours and three sixes. Ben Norrington's unbeaten 52 from 41 balls ensured the visitors accelerated through the death overs. Indeveer Sahota was the pick of Sonning's attack, taking 3-42 from his nine overs, while Aashmit Ghosh and Jack Durrant each claimed a wicket.

Chasing a target well beyond par, Sonning's reply never truly got going. Early wickets left the hosts reeling, with Gaurav Jayan (11), Duncan Parr (3) and Indeveer Sahota (0) all falling cheaply. The most encouraging passage of the innings came via a fifth-wicket partnership of 72 between Akash Vasa (32) and Aashmit Ghosh (38), who together provided some resistance and the only real fluency in the batting. Once that stand was broken, the remaining wickets fell steadily, and Sonning were bowled out for 180 in 41.5 overs, losing by 137 runs.

3rd XI: Hampstead Norreys (99-5) beat Sonning (98 all out) by 5 wickets — Division 7A (Away)

The 3rd XI endured a frustrating afternoon at The Dean Meadow, bowled out for just 98 before Hampstead Norreys chased the target inside 19 overs. Having been inserted after the home side won the toss, Sonning found life extremely difficult against a disciplined bowling attack. Naykesh Kolpe was the chief destroyer with remarkable figures of 4-11 from nine overs, five of which were maidens, while Vishwanath Timmanagoudar took 3-21. Harrison Lott top-scored with a battling 19 from 83 balls, while Aveer Sidhu (16) and Christopher Dowse (16) offered brief resistance, but no batsman was able to build a substantial innings.

With just 99 needed, Hampstead Norreys lost early wickets to give Sonning a glimmer of hope. Reyansh Setia struck twice in a single over to finish with 2-4, and Arthur Parkes claimed 2-29 from six overs, three of them maidens. But Rohit Banka's composed 44 from 68 balls anchored the chase, and despite Christopher Dowse removing Philbert Mathew (19), Hampstead Norreys reached their target with five wickets and plenty of overs to spare. It was a match that ultimately hinged on Sonning's inability to post a competitive total.

4th XI: Crowthorne & Crown Wood (365-4) beat Sonning (146-9) by 219 runs — Division 9C (Away)

The 4th XI faced a daunting afternoon at Edgbarrow School after electing to field and seeing Crowthorne & Crown Wood amass a colossal 365-4 from their 40 overs. Nikunj Mehta was devastating at the top, hammering 94 from 86 balls with sixteen fours and a six, while Krunal Patel smashed an unbeaten 83 from just 46 deliveries. Joe Robinson contributed 64 and captain Jake Gibbings blasted 53 from 31 balls, including five sixes. Key partnerships of 133 for the second wicket between Mehta and Robinson, and 109 for the fourth between Patel and Gibbings, left Sonning's bowlers with nowhere to hide. Neel Kumar was the best of the attack with 2-46, while Rish Bajpai's nine overs for 38 and one wicket showed admirable economy amid the carnage.

In reply, the required rate was always unrealistic, but Peeush Bajpai provided the innings' highlight with a superb 70 from 66 balls, cracking fourteen fours and a six. He shared an excellent fourth-wicket partnership of 86 with captain Arun Raghavendra (31), and the pair at least ensured Sonning competed with some pride. However, once Bajpai fell caught, the remaining batting could not sustain the momentum, and Sonning closed on 146-9 from 29.2 overs. Noah Darby's 3-14 and Nathan Elliot's 2-6 did the damage for the hosts.

Sunday 1s: Warfield (192-5) beat Sonning (188-9) by 5 wickets — Friendly (Away)

Sunday's friendly at Warfield's Memorial Ground produced a competitive contest that ultimately slipped away from Sonning. Winning the toss and batting first, the visitors were indebted to Kishan Akula, who top-scored with an excellent 59 from 72 balls, hitting twelve boundaries. Robert Jones made a fluent 48 with nine fours, and the pair were involved in a key fifth-wicket stand of 41 that helped rebuild after early setbacks. A further partnership of 80 between Akula and Wasim Amin (32) for the sixth wicket gave the innings real substance, and Sonning posted 188-9 from their 35 overs.

In the chase, Warfield captain Dan Torry led from the front with a commanding 72 from 83 balls, peppering the boundary with fifteen fours. Despite Robert Jones (2-20) and Wasim Amin (2-22) keeping the pressure on with two wickets apiece, and a run-out of Tim Worsley offering hope, Taranjit Gidey's unbeaten 44 kept Warfield on track. They reached 192-5 in the 34th over, winning by five wickets in what was ultimately a tight affair decided by the hosts' superior batting depth.

A mixed weekend sees the 1st XI continue to fly the flag with an emphatic victory, while the lower sides will look to regroup and respond when Sonning return to action next Saturday.
