Senior Roundup: Goodman's Seven-For Not Enough as Sonning Endure Tough Weekend

It was a chastening weekend for Sonning Cricket Club, with just one victory from four senior matches across Saturday and Sunday. The 3rd XI provided the sole bright spot with a hard-fought chase against Eversley, while the 1st XI suffered a painful low-scoring defeat at home to Beaconsfield despite a magnificent seven-wicket haul from Damario Goodman. The 4th XI were overpowered by a Royal Ascot side inspired by a stunning century, and the Sunday 1s went down in an intra-club fixture at King George's Field.

1st XI vs Beaconsfield — Lost by 13 runs (Division 1B)

In a match where 173 runs were scored across both innings combined, Sonning's 1st XI will be left ruing a batting collapse that squandered one of the most impressive individual bowling displays of the season. After Beaconsfield won the toss and elected to bat at King George's Field, Damario Goodman produced a devastating spell of 7-20 from 9.3 overs to tear through the visitors' line-up. Captain Peter Higginbottom chipped in with 3-25 from his nine overs, while Mohammed Zahid was supremely miserly with figures of 0-6 from five overs, three of which were maidens. Beaconsfield were bundled out for just 93, with only Montgomery Evans (25 off 33 balls) and Jago Catherwood (22 off 47) offering any real resistance.

However, what should have been a routine chase turned into a nightmare. Sonning lost early wickets as the top order crumbled, with Muhammad Ayub falling lbw for a golden duck and Dhruv Peshkar going for just 2. Mohammed Zahid showed his all-round capabilities with a spirited 24 off 30 balls, including a six, and shared a crucial 30-run partnership with Sid Anilkumar for the fourth wicket. But once Zahid was caught, the innings disintegrated. Toby Slater was the chief destroyer for the visitors, claiming 5-30 from 7.3 overs, while Scott Jackson took 2-10. Sonning were bowled out for 80 in just 23.3 overs, falling 13 runs short in what will go down as one of the most frustrating defeats of the campaign. Danyal Ghazi showed admirable fight with 9 off 40 balls, but partners kept falling around him. It was a match Sonning dominated for the first half but simply could not finish off.

3rd XI vs Eversley — Won by 2 wickets (Division 7A)

The 3rd XI delivered the weekend's only victory with a nervy two-wicket win away at Knowl Hill, chasing down Eversley's 206 all out with two wickets in hand. It was a match that swung back and forth, demanding composure from captain Arun Kumar Pera's side throughout.

After Eversley won the toss and chose to bat, openers Vijay Nawale (37 off 54 balls) and Neil Devanand (16) put on a brisk 60-run opening stand to lay a solid platform. The middle order stuttered, but a quickfire 48 off just 22 balls from Sabya Sen — who launched five sixes in a blistering cameo — threatened to take the game away from Sonning. Sen shared a dangerous 68-run seventh-wicket partnership with Elay Sen before Sonning's bowlers wrestled back control. Indeveer Sahota was the pick of the attack with 3-29 from nine overs, while Reyansh Setia (2-31) and Tom Wolfenden (2-37) provided excellent support. Aashmit Ghosh was economical with 1-29 from his 8.1 overs.

The chase began disastrously as Sonning slumped to 6-2, with Harrison Lott lbw for a duck and Aseem Shafi bowled for 2. Enter Shamitha Widanapathirana and Paul Towner, who steadied the ship with a match-defining 85-run partnership for the third wicket. Towner contributed a valuable 37 off 49 balls before falling caught, but Widanapathirana batted superbly for his 65 off 84 balls, stroking ten boundaries in a composed knock that was the backbone of the innings. He and skipper Pera added another 54 for the fourth wicket before Widanapathirana was bowled. Pera made 28 off 31 balls, and Akash Udayan (24 off 31) kept the scoreboard ticking through a useful 34-run stand with Ravi Kumar. When wickets fell in clusters late on, Tom Wolfenden smashed an unbeaten 16 off just 9 balls — including a six — to see Sonning home with a flourish, reaching 209-8 in the 41st over.

4th XI vs Royal Ascot — Lost by 118 runs (Division 9C)

The 4th XI were on the wrong end of an individual masterclass at Yateley Manor School, as Royal Ascot captain Ishaan Banerjee hammered 126 off 105 balls — an innings laced with 16 fours and 6 sixes — to set up a commanding total that Sonning could never threaten. Having won the toss and elected to field, Arun Raghavendra's side were made to pay as Banerjee anchored the Royal Ascot innings almost single-handedly.

Banerjee was involved in three substantial partnerships: an 88-run opening stand with Raf Bocchio (28), a 72-run third-wicket alliance with Deep Mohain (17), and a 66-run fourth-wicket partnership with Martin Kay (32). Even after his dismissal, Aizaz Hussain provided late fireworks with a brutal 29 off just 11 balls, including three sixes, as Royal Ascot posted an imposing 310-7 from their 40 overs. Captain Raghavendra was the most successful Sonning bowler with 2-40 from five overs, while Shahbaz Ali, Syed Adnan, Moksha Suriarachchi, Alastair Parkes, and Kyle Dellar-Law all took a wicket apiece.

In reply, Sonning gave a decent account of themselves in patches but were always behind the required rate. A 77-run second-wicket partnership between Dhiren Panchal (34 off 47 balls) and Kyle Dellar-Law gave the innings its best foundation. Dellar-Law was the standout with a fluent 48 off 37 deliveries, cracking eight fours and a six before being bowled. Once he fell, however, wickets tumbled regularly. Lower-order hitter Alastair Parkes threatened a late revival with an aggressive 36 off 26 balls, featuring five fours and two sixes, and shared a 37-run seventh-wicket stand with Moksha Suriarachchi. But it was too little too late, and Sonning were dismissed for 192 in 32.4 overs, falling 118 runs short.

Sunday 1s vs Sonning Sunday As — Lost by 3 wickets

In an entertaining intra-club affair at King George's Field on Sunday, the Sunday 1s posted 144 all out before the Sunday As chased the target down with three wickets to spare. It was a lively contest between clubmates, with the Sunday As ultimately proving too strong in the run chase.

Batting first after the Sunday As won the toss and opted to field, the Sunday 1s lost wickets at regular intervals despite some bright individual contributions. Yusuf Malik anchored the middle overs with a composed 30 off 35 balls before retiring not out, while Aashmit Ghosh struck 29 off 23 balls at the top of the order, including three fours and a six. The pair shared a 52-run third-wicket stand that was the most productive partnership of the innings. At the other end, Kranthi Yennaboini made a brisk 19 off 15 balls. Timothy Jenner was the unlikely hero late on, smashing an unbeaten 30 off 26 balls to drag the total to respectability, with a 45-run ninth-wicket partnership with Ismail Raza adding crucial runs.

The Sunday As' reply was anchored by strong contributions at the top. Richard Skeil blazed 26 off just 14 balls to set the tone, before Moksha Suriarachchi (32 off 34) and Mohit Karangad (31 off 25) both retired not out after laying the platform with an excellent 68-run second-wicket stand. The middle order wobbled as Edward Duvall struck twice in a single over and Ismail Raza claimed 2-10 from 1.5 overs, reducing the Sunday As to some anxious moments. But the early damage had been done, and the target was reached at 146-7 in the 22nd over.

A weekend of just one win from four is not what Sonning would have hoped for, but there were encouraging individual performances to build on — Goodman's seven-for, Widanapathirana's match-winning 65, and Dellar-Law's classy 48 among them. The club will look to regroup and convert strong individual showings into team results when they return to action next Saturday.
