Senior Roundup: A Tough Weekend Softened by Third XI Triumph
Senior Roundup: A Tough Weekend Softened by Third XI Triumph
It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for Sonning Cricket Club, with one win from three senior matches across Saturday and Sunday. The 3rd XI delivered a commanding victory at Woodley, but the 2nd XI suffered a heavy defeat at home to High Wycombe, and the Sunday 1s fell short in a friendly against Cookham Dean at King George's Field.
2nd XI vs High Wycombe (Home) — Division 4B
Sonning's 2nd XI endured a difficult afternoon at King George's Field as High Wycombe's 3rd XI romped to a comprehensive victory. After losing the toss and being inserted, Dan Anderson's side were in immediate trouble, slumping to 47-6 as opposition seamer Mantaka Muhtadi ripped through the top and middle order with a devastating spell of 6-21 from 12 overs, including five maidens.
From the wreckage, Max Murphy produced a superb rearguard effort, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 51 from 81 balls, striking seven fours. He found a willing partner in Ethan Towner, and the pair put on a crucial 66-run stand for the ninth wicket to drag Sonning to a more respectable 143 all out. Towner contributed a brisk 20 from 24 balls before being run out.
However, the total proved woefully inadequate as High Wycombe opener Harikrishnan Balakrishnan produced a breathtaking innings of 120 not out from just 46 deliveries, smashing 18 fours and seven sixes. Alongside Chris Russell's composed unbeaten 23, the pair chased down the target without loss in just 12.4 overs, leaving the Sonning bowlers with nowhere to hide. It was a chastening experience, with six different bowlers used to no avail.
3rd XI vs Woodley (Away) — Division 7A
The 3rd XI delivered the standout performance of the weekend with an emphatic victory at Woodford Park. Asked to bat first after Woodley won the toss, Arun Kumar Pera's side posted an imposing 292-5 from their 45 overs, built on an outstanding century from Shamitha Widanapathirana.
Openers Aseem Shafi (29) and Gaurav Jayan (33) laid a solid foundation with a 71-run opening partnership. The momentum continued through Rahul Sood, who was promoted up the order and struck a fluent 39 from 42 balls, sharing a 77-run third-wicket stand with Widanapathirana. The Sri Lankan then took centre stage, reaching a magnificent 105 not out from 85 balls, laced with 14 fours and a six. He was involved in three significant partnerships, including a 55-run fifth-wicket stand with Daniel Edwards. Aashmit Ghosh provided the late fireworks with an explosive unbeaten 36 from just 15 deliveries, clearing the ropes twice.
In reply, Woodley fought hard, with Rakesh Sriramoju (71 from 64 balls) and Anish Pandey (64 from 65 balls) putting on 89 for the fifth wicket to keep the chase alive. Harsh Sahay's blistering 31 not out kept the scoreboard ticking late on. However, the Sonning attack held their nerve, with Akash Vasa claiming 3-44 from 8.5 overs and Asad Imam taking 3-48 from his eight overs. Zain Shahid chipped in with 2-59 and Aashmit Ghosh added a wicket as Woodley were eventually restricted to 234-9, falling 58 runs short of the target.
Sunday 1s vs Cookham Dean (Home) — Friendly
The Sunday 1s came up just short in an entertaining friendly at King George's Field, losing by six wickets despite a fine individual effort from captain Robert Jones. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Sonning got off to a promising start as Moksha Suriarachchi (26) and Mohit Karangad (30) put on 52 for the opening wicket.
Jones then took command with a superb knock of 70 from 39 balls, striking 13 fours in a display of clean hitting. He shared a vital 64-run fourth-wicket partnership with Christopher Dowse, who contributed a measured 30 from 41 deliveries. However, the innings lost momentum in the closing stages, with Mark Pateman's miserly spell of 2-2 from two overs and Guy Donald's 2-12 restricting Sonning to 194-8 from their 35 overs.
In reply, Cookham Dean's chase was anchored by half-centuries from James Milligan (50 from 43 balls) and Robert Mettler (52 from 32 balls, including four sixes), both of whom retired not out. James Charlton-Perez was the pick of the Sonning bowlers with an economical 1-10 from five overs, while Idris Malik bowled tidily for 1-5 from three. However, it was not enough as Cookham Dean reached 195-4 with more than five overs to spare.
The club will look to bounce back next weekend, with the 3rd XI's momentum and Widanapathirana's century form providing genuine cause for optimism across the senior sides.
