Senior Roundup: A Tough Weekend Softened by Sunday Silverware

It was a challenging weekend for Sonning Cricket Club, with all three Saturday league sides suffering defeats before the Sunday 1s salvaged some pride with a thrilling chase at King George's Field. The 1st XI ground out a draw against Reading in Division 1B, the 2nd XI were swept aside at Taplow, the 3rd XI were on the wrong end of a run-fest against Theale and Tilehurst, and the 4th XI came up short chasing a hefty total against Cove. Sunday's victory over Nomads, featuring two centuries across the match, provided a welcome tonic.

1st XI vs Reading — Draw (Division 1B, Home)

Reading won the toss and chose to bat at King George's Field, but captain Peter Higginbottom produced a superb spell of bowling to keep the visitors in check. Higginbottom was the pick of the attack, returning outstanding figures of 4-33 from 13 overs, including four maidens. Danyal Ghazi chipped in with 2-42 from his 13 overs, while Damario Goodman was economical with 1-35 from 15. Reading were reduced to difficult positions on multiple occasions, with Arjun Srinivasan (42 off 80 balls) and Rishit Pandey (39 off 69) providing the backbone of their innings. A 58-run eighth-wicket stand between Pandey and Samarth Manu (18 not out) dragged Reading to 161-8 from their 52 overs.

In reply, Sonning's chase got off to a solid start as Alex Mcloughlin (36 off 66 balls, five fours) and Dhruv Peshkar (26 off 69) put on 64 for the opening wicket. However, once that partnership was broken, wickets fell steadily against a disciplined Reading attack. Moin Khowaja did the damage with 4-34 from 11 overs, while Praful Waghela (2-25 from 15) was miserly at the other end. Sonning slipped to 118-8 from 48 overs, with Danyal Ghazi (5 not out) and Damario Goodman (10 not out) seeing out the remaining deliveries to ensure the draw. A point earned, but the 1st XI will feel an opportunity went begging.

2nd XI vs Taplow — Lost by 10 wickets (Division 4B, Away)

The 2nd XI endured a difficult afternoon at Ten Acres after Taplow won the toss and inserted Sonning. Captain Dan Anderson found runs hard to come by at the top, grafting 10 off 54 deliveries before being bowled. It was Shamitha Widanapathirana who offered the most resistance, striking five fours in a battling 25 off 40 balls before being run out. Paul Towner provided some late fireworks with 12 off just seven balls, including three boundaries, but Hamza Ahmed (3-7 from four overs) and Fahim Khan Neamat Ullah (3-22 from 8.5) tore through the Sonning line-up as the visitors were bowled out for just 88 in 32.5 overs.

The modest target proved no challenge whatsoever for Taplow, whose openers made light work of the chase. Khawaja Ahmed smashed 44 not out off 31 balls with five fours and a six, while Summer Abbas blazed 34 not out off 26 with three fours and two sixes. The hosts knocked off the runs in just 9.3 overs without losing a wicket — a chastening defeat for the 2nd XI who will need to regroup quickly.

3rd XI vs Theale and Tilehurst — Lost by 312 runs (Division 7A, Home)

Sam Taylor's 3rd XI were on the receiving end of a brutal display of batting at Knowl Hill after Theale and Tilehurst won the toss and elected to bat. Nazeem Hussain produced a monumental innings of 166 not out off 131 balls, laced with 16 fours and six sixes, while Rob Why was equally destructive with 133 off 84 deliveries, clearing the ropes eight times and finding the boundary on 14 further occasions. George Coker added a rapid 51 off just 22 balls, including six sixes, as the visitors amassed an imposing 455-4 from their 45 overs. Edward McLoughlin was the best of the Sonning bowlers with 2-68 from his nine overs, but it was a long day in the field.

Faced with a mammoth target, Sonning needed early momentum and Alexander Fleming provided exactly that, blazing 47 off 31 balls with five sixes and two fours — a fearless counter-attack. Hugo Popplewell (21) and Edward McLoughlin (20) also contributed, while Shahbaz Ali made a useful 21 lower down. However, the challenge was simply too great, and the innings folded for 143 all out in 22.4 overs. Jibran Naeem wrapped up the tail with 2-4 from 1.4 overs, while Bilal Naeem and Adrees Shaheen each claimed two wickets apiece.

4th XI vs Cove — Lost by 77 runs (Division 9C, Home)

Matthew Dawes won the toss and chose to bowl at Yateley Manor School, but Cove's Robert Shuttleworth had other ideas, compiling a magnificent unbeaten 111 off 125 balls, an innings punctuated by 15 fours and two sixes. Shuttleworth was the anchor around whom several productive partnerships were built, including stands of 81 with Dush Patel (33), 69 with Abhishek Chaudhary (20), and 42 with Sreekanth Thekkedathu Kadalayil (30). Arnav Duvvuri was the standout Sonning bowler with 2-25 from eight tidy overs, while James Haxell took 2-63. Cove posted a formidable 269-6 from their 40 overs.

In reply, Sonning's response was spirited despite falling short. Dhiren Panchal and Matthew Dawes put on 43 for the first wicket before Panchal fell for 9. Dawes contributed a captain's knock of 25 before his departure brought together Elliot Dawes and Arnav Duvvuri for a superb 126-run third-wicket partnership. Duvvuri played fluently for 44 off 61 balls with four boundaries, but it was Elliot Dawes who shone brightest, batting through the innings for a magnificent unbeaten 92 off 99 balls, including 12 fours. Sonning closed on 192-3 from their 40 overs — a creditable effort but ultimately 77 runs adrift of the target.

Sunday 1s vs Nomads — Won by 6 wickets (Friendly, Home)

The Sunday 1s delivered the result of the weekend with a superb six-wicket victory over Nomads at King George's Field. Nomads batted first after winning the toss and were propelled by Pete Dean's outstanding century — 100 off 88 balls, featuring 18 fours, before retiring not out. Kyle Bradley added an unbeaten 55 off 64 with eight fours and two sixes, as Nomads posted 229-3 from 36 overs. James Charlton-Perez was the most effective Sonning bowler with 2-16 from five overs, while Robert Jones returned tidy figures of 1-33 from eight.

Sonning's reply was built on a magnificent partnership between Robert Jones and Richard Skeil, who put on 135 for the second wicket. Skeil was aggressive from the outset, crashing 14 fours in his 72 off 69 balls before falling caught. Jones then anchored the chase with a sublime unbeaten 101 off 102 balls, striking 15 fours in a chanceless innings before retiring. Daniel Longridge weighed in with an unbeaten 36 off 37, and the pair added 68 together to keep the run rate ticking. Sonning reached their target of 230-4 in 39.3 overs, with Christopher Dowse seeing them over the line.

Sonning will hope to carry the momentum of Sunday's victory into next weekend's fixtures, with the Saturday league sides looking to bounce back after a tough day across the board.
