Senior Roundup: A Tough Saturday for Sonning as All Four Teams Fall Short

It was a weekend to forget for Sonning Cricket Club, with all four senior sides in action on Saturday suffering defeats. From a nail-biting two-wicket loss for the 1st XI at home to comprehensive defeats on the road for the lower teams, there were nonetheless individual performances to savour across the club.

1st XI vs Cove CC — Division 1B (Home)

Sonning's 1st XI came agonisingly close to victory at King George's Field but ultimately fell short as Cove chased down 192 with two wickets in hand and just four balls to spare. Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and elected to bat, but it was Muhammad Ayub who anchored the innings with an excellent 61 from 64 balls, striking eight fours. He shared an opening stand of 56 with Dhruv Peshkar (15) before adding a further 30 for the second wicket with Amaad Ali (15).

When Ayub departed, Sonning found themselves in trouble as wickets fell at regular intervals through the middle order. Higginbottom managed just 1, and at 142-8 the innings looked in danger of petering out. However, a vital ninth-wicket partnership of 49 between Danyal Ghazi (34 off 36 balls) and Damario Goodman injected much-needed impetus. Goodman was particularly destructive, smashing an unbeaten 30 from just 17 deliveries, including two sixes and two fours, to lift Sonning to 191-9 from their 50 overs.

In reply, Cove's chase was far from straightforward. Goodman struck early with the new ball, and Danyal Ghazi claimed two wickets as the visitors slipped to precarious positions. At 68-4, Sonning sensed an opportunity, but Gavin Sinclair steadied the ship with a patient 52 from 92 balls. He featured in partnerships of 38 with Archie Smith (23) and 41 with Nick Randall (15) to rebuild the innings. Even after Sinclair fell — caught off Ghulam Abbas — Chris Farmiloe seized control with an unbeaten 42 off 31 balls to guide Cove home at 192-8. Goodman's figures of 2-18 from ten overs, including four maidens, deserved better reward, while Higginbottom (2-58) and Ghazi (2-41) also chipped in with wickets.

2nd XI vs Holmer Green CC — Division 4B (Away)

The 2nd XI's trip to Holmer Green proved a chastening experience as they were bowled out for 108 and saw the hosts race to victory inside 14 overs, losing just three wickets. Captain Dan Anderson won the toss and chose to bat, and a promising opening stand of 53 between Gaurav Jayan and Aseem Shafi (11) gave Sonning a solid platform.

Jayan top-scored with 32 from 45 balls, finding four fours and a six, while Anderson contributed 16 from 33 deliveries. However, once the openers were parted, Holmer Green's attack took control. Harry Stephens was the chief destroyer with 4-23 from seven overs, while Andrew Richmond claimed 5-24 from 5.5 overs as Sonning collapsed from 53-1 to 108 all out in 24.5 overs. Alexander Fleming's quickfire 13 off nine balls offered brief resistance at the tail, but it was not enough.

The target of 109 proved no challenge whatsoever for the hosts. Stephens, fresh from his four-wicket haul, blazed an unbeaten 43 from 40 balls with seven fours and three sixes. Scott Norwood was equally destructive, hammering 38 from just 23 deliveries before being run out. The pair shared a devastating third-wicket partnership of 67 that took the game away from Sonning. Jameel Ahamed (1-26) and Max Murphy (1-22) were the only Sonning bowlers to take wickets as Holmer Green cruised to 111-3 in 13.2 overs.

3rd XI vs Welford Park CC — Division 7A (Away)

Captain Arun Kumar Pera won the toss and inserted Welford Park at Welford Park, but the hosts compiled an imposing 245 all out in 44.4 overs, built around a superb unbeaten 91 from Max Seaward. Seaward hit 12 fours and a six from 98 balls and was at the centre of everything, featuring in partnerships of 53 with Suvojyoti Datta (64), 35 with Sardar sarfraz Abbasi (20), 32 with Srinath Balasubramanian (11), 33 with Andy Cale (10), and 35 with Mason Brown (8). Isaac Jenner was the pick of Sonning's bowlers with 3-45 from nine overs, while Reyansh Setia (2-37) and Ali Parkes (2-33) also made inroads. Rahul Sood added a wicket with his five economical overs.

In reply, Sonning gave the chase a genuine go but fell short at 203 all out in 41.3 overs. Ravi Kumar top-scored with an enterprising 42 from 46 balls, featuring six fours, while Rahul Sood contributed 32 from 35 deliveries in a useful third-wicket stand. A 76-run fifth-wicket partnership between Ravi Kumar and Daniel Parks (24 off 51 balls) was the highlight of the innings and briefly raised hopes of a remarkable run chase. Asad Imam added 16 and captain Pera made 19, but Will Herrington's 4-28 from 7.3 overs and Drew Brown's miserly 3-17 from six overs ultimately proved too much for the Sonning batting line-up, leaving them 42 runs adrift.

4th XI vs Sandhurst CC — Division 9C (Away)

The 4th XI were sent in by Sandhurst and posted a competitive 143-5 from their 40 overs, largely thanks to a patient half-century from Santhosh Murugaraj and a fluent knock from captain Arun Raghavendra. Murugaraj carried his bat for an unbeaten 52 from 125 balls, anchoring the innings with five fours, while Raghavendra played the more aggressive role with 41 off 70 balls, including seven boundaries. The pair came together with the score under pressure and shared a crucial fifth-wicket stand of 87 that formed the backbone of the innings. Russell Stone's remarkable figures of 2-7 from eight overs — five of them maidens — had earlier kept Sonning firmly in check.

Defending 144, Sonning's bowlers made early breakthroughs but could not sustain the pressure. Raghavendra led from the front with 2-16 from four overs, while Joe Donohue (1-10 from three overs, including a maiden), Isaac Blakey (1-25), and James Charlton-Perez (1-26) all claimed wickets. However, Shyam Shrestha's explosive 53 from 43 balls, which included nine fours, set the tone for the chase. He shared a 52-run opening partnership with Luke O'Neil (17) before adding 39 for the second wicket with Perry Lewington (39 not out). Lewington's composed unbeaten innings guided Sandhurst home to 145-5 in 25.2 overs with relative comfort.

A frustrating clean sweep of defeats across the board leaves Sonning looking to regroup quickly. The teams will be hoping for a change of fortune when they return to action next weekend, with lessons to learn but plenty of individual performances on which to build.
