Senior Roundup: A Tough Saturday as All Four Sides Fall to Defeat

It was a weekend to forget for Sonning Cricket Club, as all four senior men's sides tasted defeat on Saturday. Despite competitive performances across the board — including several individual highlights — the club was unable to convert promising positions into victories, leaving plenty to reflect on ahead of the next round of fixtures.

1st XI vs Cove CC — Division 1B (Home)

Sonning's first team suffered a heartbreaking two-wicket defeat at King George's Field, falling agonisingly short of defending 191 against Cove. Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and chose to bat, and the hosts were given a solid platform by an opening stand of 56 between Dhruv Peshkar (15) and Muhammad Ayub. Ayub was the standout with the bat, striking 61 from 64 balls with eight fours before being caught, an innings that anchored the middle overs.

The innings wobbled through the middle order, with Sonning slipping from 86-2 to 131-8 as Thomas Redhead (3-32) and Dubs Wood (3-42) ripped through the batting. However, a spirited ninth-wicket partnership of 49 between Danyal Ghazi (34) and Damario Goodman breathed life back into the total. Goodman finished unbeaten on 30 from just 17 balls, smashing two sixes and two fours to haul Sonning to a more competitive 191-9 from their 50 overs.

In reply, Cove were rocked early when Ella Phillips had Wood bowled for a duck, and Sonning's bowlers kept chipping away. Damario Goodman was outstanding with the ball, returning figures of 2-18 from ten overs with four maidens, while Danyal Ghazi (2-41) and Higginbottom (2-58) also struck. At 109-7, Sonning sensed victory, but Chris Farmiloe's unbeaten 42 from 31 balls, combined with a dogged knock of 52 from Gavin Sinclair, proved decisive. Farmiloe guided Cove home with four balls to spare at 192-8, a result that will sting given how close Sonning came to turning the screw.

2nd XI vs Holmer Green CC — Division 4B (Away)

The seconds were comprehensively beaten at Holmer Green, bowled out for 108 before watching the hosts chase down the target in just 13.2 overs for the loss of three wickets. Captain Dan Anderson won the toss and elected to bat, and Sonning made a promising start through Gaurav Jayan and Aseem Shafi, who put on 53 for the first wicket.

Jayan top-scored with 32 from 45 balls, including four fours and a six, while Anderson contributed 16 and Alexander Fleming struck a brisk 13 from nine deliveries. But the middle and lower order were dismantled by Andrew Richmond (5-24 from 5.5 overs) and Harry Stephens (4-23 from 7 overs), with the last seven wickets tumbling for just 55 runs as Sonning were bowled out inside 25 overs.

The reply was swift and brutal. Stephens backed up his bowling heroics with an unbeaten 43 from 40 balls, while Scott Norwood bludgeoned 38 from just 23 deliveries before being run out. The pair added 67 for the third wicket to put the result beyond doubt. Jameel Ahamed (1-26) and Max Murphy (1-22) were the only Sonning bowlers to take wickets in a chastening afternoon.

3rd XI vs Welford Park CC — Division 7A (Away)

Captain Arun Kumar Pera's third XI put in a spirited effort at Welford Park but ultimately fell 42 runs short chasing 246 in Division 7A. Having won the toss and opted to bowl, Sonning were confronted by an imposing innings from Max Seaward, who compiled an unbeaten 91 from 98 balls with twelve fours and a six. Seaward was involved in a string of partnerships that kept Welford Park ticking along, adding 53 with Suvojyoti Datta (64) for the third wicket and further stands of 35, 32, 33, and 35 with successive partners.

Isaac Jenner was the pick of the Sonning bowlers with 3-45 from nine overs, while Reyansh Setia (2-37) and Ali Parkes (2-33) also made contributions. Rahul Sood weighed in with a tidy 1-21 from five overs, and the bowlers did well to dismiss Welford Park for 245, but the total always looked daunting.

In reply, Sonning's chase was built around several useful contributions without anyone going on to make a truly decisive score. Ravi Kumar top-scored with 42 from 46 balls, and Rahul Sood made 32 from 35 deliveries, with the pair involved in key partnerships that kept Sonning in the hunt. Daniel Parks ground out 24 from 51 balls, and he and Ravi Kumar added 76 for the fifth wicket to briefly raise hopes. However, Will Herrington's 4-28 and Drew Brown's 3-17 proved too much, and Sonning were bowled out for 203 in the 42nd over.

4th XI vs Sandhurst CC — Division 9C (Away)

The fourth XI were left to rue a below-par batting performance as Sandhurst chased down 144 with five wickets in hand at Sandhurst Cricket Club. After being inserted by the hosts, Sonning found runs hard to come by against a disciplined bowling attack, with Russell Stone's remarkable figures of 2-7 from eight overs — including five maidens — proving particularly miserly.

Santhosh Murugaraj was the backbone of the innings, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 52 from 125 balls with five fours in a patient display. Captain Arun Raghavendra provided the best support with 41 from 70 balls, and the pair put on 87 for the fifth wicket to rescue the innings from a precarious position. Piyanshu Desai added an unbeaten 8 as Sonning closed on 143-5 from their 40 overs.

In the chase, Shyam Shrestha took the game away from Sonning with an aggressive 53 from 43 balls, cracking nine fours in an innings that set the tone. Perry Lewington's unbeaten 39 from 38 balls then guided Sandhurst home with nearly 15 overs to spare. Raghavendra was the standout with the ball, taking 2-16 from four overs, while Joe Donohue's economical spell of 1-10 from three overs offered encouragement. Isaac Blakey (1-25) and James Charlton-Perez (1-26) also claimed scalps, but Sonning were unable to build sustained pressure on the Sandhurst batting line-up.

A difficult day across the board, but there were plenty of individual performances to build on — not least Muhammad Ayub's 61 for the firsts and Santhosh Murugaraj's patient half-century for the fourths. Sonning will be looking to bounce back strongly when they return to action next weekend.
