Senior Roundup: A Tough Saturday Across the Board
Senior Roundup: A Tough Saturday Across the Board
It was a chastening weekend for Sonning Cricket Club, with three of the four senior sides in action on Saturday falling to defeat. Only the 4th XI bucked the trend with an emphatic nine-wicket victory, while the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XIs all came up short in their respective league encounters.
1st XI vs Wokingham (Home) — Division 1B
Sonning's 1st XI suffered a heavy defeat at King George's Field as Wokingham's 2nd XI posted 291 all out before bowling the hosts out for just 135. Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and opted to field, but despite two outstanding individual bowling displays, the visitors' batting proved too deep.
Mohammed Zahid and Damario Goodman were superb with the ball, claiming five wickets apiece. Goodman was particularly miserly, returning figures of 5-27 from his ten overs with four maidens, while Zahid finished with 5-46 from 9.4 overs. However, Wokingham's Mushtafa Mushafa played a magnificent innings of 91 from 76 balls, striking eleven fours and three sixes, and his 113-run fifth-wicket partnership with Mack Keast (63 off 67 balls) proved the decisive stand of the match. The other five Sonning bowlers went wicketless, with Danyal Ghazi conceding 97 from his ten overs.
The reply never truly got going. Muhammad Ayub top-scored with 27 from 30 balls, but wickets fell at regular intervals against a disciplined Wokingham attack. Jacob Clark was the chief destroyer with 4-44, while Paul Dewick (2-15) and Daniel Longridge (2-16) kept things tight at the other end. Indeveer Sahota battled hard for 24 off 71 deliveries, and his 47-run eighth-wicket stand with Ghazi (30 not out) at least added some respectability, but Sonning were ultimately bowled out for 135 in the 36th over — well short of their target.
2nd XI vs Hillingdon Manor (Away) — Division 4B
The 2nd XI travelled to Coney Green and posted a competitive 250-7 from their 45 overs after captain Dan Anderson won the toss and elected to bat, but Hillingdon Manor chased the total down with six wickets and two overs to spare.
Robert Jones was the star of the Sonning innings, smashing 63 from just 50 balls with ten fours and a six. He was well supported by Duncan Parr, who anchored proceedings with a patient 48 from 100 deliveries, and Raoul Harding, who struck a brisk 36 off 35 balls including five fours and a six. The pair put on 63 for the third wicket, giving Sonning a solid platform. Later, Jones and Gaurav Jayan (25 not out off 21 balls) added 78 for the sixth wicket to push the total past 250.
Unfortunately, the bowling attack could not defend it. Rohanvir Sidhu compiled a composed 72 from 114 balls at the top of the order, sharing a mammoth 129-run second-wicket partnership with Amar Lal (45). Hamza Shahid then accelerated proceedings with a rapid 51 off just 35 balls, laced with ten fours. Jack Durrant (1-59) and Duncan Parr (1-36) each picked up a wicket, and Dan Anderson chipped in with 1-26, but Hillingdon Manor reached 253-4 in the 44th over. Ghulam Abbas bowled tidily, conceding just 24 from his nine overs with a maiden, but could not find a breakthrough.
3rd XI vs Sulhamstead & Ufton (Home) — Division 7A
The 3rd XI endured a difficult afternoon at Knowl Hill, bowled out for just 78 before Sulhamstead & Ufton knocked off the runs for the loss of only three wickets inside 18 overs.
Sulhamstead won the toss and chose to field, and their bowlers made the most of the conditions. Isa Pandor was outstanding, taking 3-9 from four overs with two maidens, while Robert Wardle claimed 3-25 from nine overs. Only Aseem Shafi (25 off 50 balls) and Hugo Popplewell (14) offered meaningful resistance as Sonning were dismissed in the 27th over.
The modest target was never going to trouble Sulhamstead, and Julian Fernando ensured there was no drama, crashing an unbeaten 53 from 45 balls with five fours and three sixes. Asad Imam bowled with good control, returning 2-16 from seven overs with three maidens, and Bikash Gurung picked up a wicket, but Fernando's aggression rendered the chase a formality. The visitors reached 79-3 with plenty of overs to spare.
4th XI vs Eversley (Home) — Division 9C
The 4th XI provided the weekend's shining light with a comprehensive nine-wicket triumph over Eversley at Yateley Manor School. After the visitors won the toss and batted, Sonning's bowlers restricted them to 202 all out in 34 overs before the top order made light work of the chase.
Elias Haidari was the pick of the Sonning attack, claiming an excellent 4-21 from five overs to rip through the Eversley middle and lower order. Isaac Jenner (2-36) struck early, while captain Arun Raghavendra (1-41) and Reyansh Setia (1-31) also chipped in. Neil Devanand (69 off 72 balls) and Aarav Gupta (46 off 40) threatened to post a bigger total for Eversley, but once they fell the innings subsided rapidly, the last five wickets tumbling for just 13 runs.
The reply was utterly dominant. Openers Paul Towner and Dhiren Panchal put on a blistering 140-run opening stand that effectively ended the contest. Panchal struck 67 from 71 balls with eleven fours and a six before falling to Tony Critchley, while Towner carried his bat for an unbeaten 73 off 72 deliveries, hitting ten fours. Matthew Dawes then came in and accelerated, blasting 34 not out from 26 balls as Sonning reached 206-1 in just 27.1 overs to complete a thoroughly convincing victory.
A weekend of one win from four will be a source of frustration, particularly given the 1st XI's inability to convert ten wickets into a competitive run chase. Sonning will look to bounce back across all sides when they return to action next Saturday.
