Senior Roundup: A Testing Weekend for Sonning as Lower Orders Shine

It was a weekend of contrasts for Sonning Cricket Club, with the senior sides recording two wins and three defeats across five matches. The 3rd XI and 4th XI both delivered impressive victories, but the 1st XI, 2nd XI and Sunday 1s all came up short despite spirited individual performances. Centuries from Shamitha Widanapathirana and a devastating unbeaten knock from opposition opener Harikrishnan Balakrishnan were among the headline acts of a dramatic two days of cricket.

1st XI vs High Wycombe (Away) — Division 1B

Sonning's 1st XI travelled to High Wycombe and, having won the toss, elected to bat on what looked a good surface. Early wickets left them in trouble, with Amaad Ali (4), Muhammad Ayub (0) and Danyal Ghazi (2) all falling cheaply as William Heyes caused havoc with figures of 3-21 from his six overs. At the other end, Max Coker also struck early to leave Sonning reeling.

It was the fifth-wicket partnership of 84 between Sid Anilkumar (38 off 56 balls) and Alex Mcloughlin that hauled Sonning back into the contest. Mcloughlin was superb, striking 14 fours in a measured knock of 97 from 130 deliveries — agonisingly falling three runs short of a deserved century when he was caught. Captain Peter Higginbottom provided valuable late impetus with an unbeaten 44 off 48 balls, the pair having added 39 for the seventh wicket, as Sonning closed on 210-8 from their 52 overs.

High Wycombe's reply was built on solid partnerships throughout. Sam Buckfield (41) and Rohan Shukla (20) put on 64 for the first wicket before Mohammed Zahid broke through, finishing with 2-47 from 15 disciplined overs. Damario Goodman also bowled with heart, taking 2-60 from his 15 overs, while Shenul Widanapathirana chipped in with an economical 1-8 from three overs. However, Senira Manikgamage's composed 61 and a mature 58-run third-wicket stand with J C Holmes (32) kept the hosts on track. O U Sarwar then steered them home with an unbeaten 42, as High Wycombe reached 211-5 with five wickets in hand — a frustrating defeat for Sonning after Mcloughlin's heroics with the bat.

2nd XI vs High Wycombe (Home) — Division 4B

The 2nd XI endured a chastening afternoon at King George's Field after being inserted by High Wycombe's 3rd XI. The Sonning batting order was dismantled by Mantaka Muhtadi, who produced a devastating spell of 6-21 from 12 overs, including five maidens. Captain Dan Anderson (4), Duncan Parr (0), Raoul Harding (4) and Henry Cook (0) all fell cheaply as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.

Max Murphy provided the lone beacon of resistance with a gritty unbeaten 51 from 81 balls, laced with seven fours. He found a willing partner in Ethan Towner (20 off 24 balls), and together they put on 66 for the ninth wicket — comfortably the best partnership of the innings — to drag Sonning to 143 all out from 38.3 overs.

What followed was one of the most destructive innings seen at King George's Field this season. Harikrishnan Balakrishnan simply took the Sonning attack apart, smashing an extraordinary unbeaten 120 from just 46 deliveries, hitting 18 fours and seven sixes. Chris Russell provided composed support with an unbeaten 23 at the other end as High Wycombe raced to 146-0 in just 12.4 overs. None of Sonning's six bowlers could make a breakthrough as the visitors completed a comprehensive victory.

3rd XI vs Woodley (Away) — Division 7A

The 3rd XI produced the performance of the weekend with a commanding victory at Woodford Park. Woodley won the toss and inserted Sonning, but lived to regret it as the visitors piled on 292-5 from their 45 overs in a dominant batting display.

Openers Aseem Shafi (29) and Gaurav Jayan (33) laid the platform with a 71-run first-wicket stand. But it was Shamitha Widanapathirana who stole the show with a magnificent unbeaten 105 from 85 balls, peppered with 14 fours and a six. Widanapathirana was involved in partnerships of 77 with Rahul Sood (39) for the third wicket, 30 with captain Arun Kumar Pera (12) for the fourth, and 55 with Daniel Edwards (8) for the fifth, anchoring the innings throughout the middle overs. Aashmit Ghosh then provided explosive late-order fireworks, blasting 36 not out from just 15 deliveries, including five fours and two sixes, to push the total beyond 290.

Woodley gave the chase a real go, with Rakesh Sriramoju (71 off 64 balls) and Anish Pandey (64 off 65 balls) combining for an 89-run fifth-wicket stand that briefly threatened an upset. Harsh Sahay also struck a rapid unbeaten 31 from 18 balls. However, Sonning's bowlers kept taking wickets at key moments. Akash Vasa was the pick with 3-44 from 8.5 overs, while Asad Imam matched him with 3-48 from eight overs. Zain Shahid (2-59) and Aashmit Ghosh (1-20) also chipped in as Woodley finished on 234-9 — 58 runs short of the target.

4th XI vs Yateley (Away) — Division 9C

Captain Arun Raghavendra's 4th XI travelled to Sean Devereux Park and delivered a clinical all-round display to secure a fine victory. Yateley won the toss and chose to bat, and while Aziz Rahman (57 off 54 balls, with six fours and three sixes) provided the hosts' main resistance, Sonning's bowlers shared the wickets impressively. Shahbaz Ali led the attack with 3-29 from eight overs, while captain Raghavendra himself weighed in with 3-23 from seven. Nischal Tiwari also claimed 3-44 from his seven overs, and Geethika Jyothis took 1-20, as Yateley were bowled out for 175 in 36 overs.

The chase was anchored by a superb century opening partnership. Hugo Popplewell struck an eye-catching 57 from 63 balls, cracking 11 fours in an attacking display, while Matthew Dawes provided the perfect foil with a composed 45 from 77 deliveries. Their stand of 101 for the first wicket effectively took the game away from Yateley. Though three quick wickets — Harrison Lott (3), Elliot Dawes (4) and Christopher Dowse (19) — briefly threatened a wobble, Daniel Parks (7 not out) and Raghavendra (1 not out) calmly saw Sonning home to 176-5 in 35 overs, with five wickets to spare.

Sunday 1s vs Cookham Dean (Home) — Friendly

Sunday's friendly at King George's Field saw Sonning post a competitive 194-8 from their 35 overs after winning the toss and batting. Captain Robert Jones was the star with a brilliant 70 from just 39 balls, striking 13 fours in a commanding display. He shared a 64-run fourth-wicket stand with Christopher Dowse (30), while earlier in the innings Moksha Suriarachchi (26) and Mohit Karangad (30) had combined for a 52-run opening partnership to get Sonning off to a solid start. Guy Donald was the most economical of Cookham Dean's many bowlers, taking 2-12 from three overs, while Mark Pateman also claimed 2-2 from two overs.

In reply, Cookham Dean's chase was built around two retired-not-out innings. James Milligan struck a fluent 50 from 43 balls (10 fours), and Robert Mettler was even more destructive with 52 from 32 deliveries, including four fours and four sixes. Their contributions, combined with a 105-run partnership spanning the middle of the innings, put Cookham Dean firmly in control. James Charlton-Perez bowled tidily for Sonning with 1-10 from five overs, and Idris Malik chipped in with 1-5 from three, but there were not enough wickets to stem the flow. Cookham Dean reached 195-4 in 29.4 overs to take the victory.

With two wins from five across the weekend, Sonning will look to regroup and build momentum next Saturday, with the 3rd and 4th XIs carrying particularly strong form into the coming fixtures.
