Senior Roundup: A Solitary Win in a Tough Weekend for Sonning

It was a challenging weekend for Sonning Cricket Club, with just one victory from four senior matches. The 1st XI delivered a fine away win at Marlow, but the 2nd XI, 3rd XI, and Sunday As all came up short, leaving plenty to reflect on heading into the next round of fixtures.

1st XI — Sonning beat Marlow by 37 runs (Away, Division 1B)

The 1st XI produced the standout result of the weekend, travelling to Marlow Cricket Club and posting a commanding 279 all out after winning the toss and electing to bat. The innings was built around three superb half-centuries. After captain Peter Higginbottom fell for a duck in the early overs, Mohammed Zahid and Muhammad Ayub steadied the ship with an excellent second-wicket partnership of 88. Ayub struck six fours and three sixes in a fluent 56 off 67 balls before being caught, while Zahid continued in elegant fashion, compiling 70 from 91 deliveries with twelve boundaries.

Amaad Ali then took centre stage, sharing another substantial stand of 89 for the third wicket with Zahid. Ali's 70 off 77 balls was a muscular effort, featuring six sixes and just a single four — a remarkable striking display. A late wobble saw Sonning lose their last seven wickets for 69, with Oskar White doing the damage for Marlow with figures of 5-45 from 8.1 overs, but the total proved more than enough.

In reply, Marlow were pegged back early as Mohammed Zahid struck with the new ball, removing Mo Arabi lbw for a duck. Zahid was the pick of the Sonning attack, returning outstanding figures of 4-46 from his ten overs. A dangerous fourth-wicket partnership of 151 between Imran Syal (57) and captain Will Bovill (87) threatened to take the game away, but Damario Goodman made crucial breakthroughs with 2-36 from nine overs, while Danyal Ghazi chipped in with 1-38. Marlow ultimately finished on 242-8 from their 50 overs, falling 37 runs short. A disciplined all-round bowling effort, with six bowlers used, ensured Sonning held their nerve to claim a valuable Division 1B victory.

2nd XI — Sonning lost to Marlow 2nd XI by 148 runs (Home, Division 4B)

It was a difficult afternoon at King George's Field for Dan Anderson's 2nd XI, who were set a daunting target after Marlow won the toss and batted first. Phil Lines was the chief architect of Sonning's misery, striking a commanding 124 from 132 balls, with seventeen fours and a six. Lines shared an opening stand of 108 with Ben Ralphs (56 off 48 balls) before adding a further 130 for the third wicket alongside Harry Bussell (43). A late cameo from Tom Hogan, who blasted 28 from just 16 deliveries, helped Marlow to an imposing 300-5 from their 45 overs.

Ethan Towner was the best of the Sonning bowlers with 2-46 from five overs, while Jack Durrant took 2-74 from nine. Indeveer Sahota's economical spell of 0-33 from nine overs provided some control, but the damage had been done through the partnerships at the top.

In reply, Sonning never truly threatened the target. Jacob Fitton provided the lone resistance with a gritty 51 from 85 balls, striking six fours in a determined knock. Jameel Ahamed offered useful support with 29 off 58, and the pair's partnerships of 31 for the fourth wicket and 40 for the fifth with Asad Imam (15) were the only significant stands of the innings. Isaac Looker proved devastating for the visitors, claiming 4-17 from 6.3 overs to wrap up the tail, as Sonning were bowled out for 152 in 42.3 overs — defeated by 148 runs.

3rd XI — Sonning lost to Checkendon 2nd XI by 77 runs (Away, Division 7A)

Travelling to Checkendon, Arun Kumar Pera's 3rd XI found themselves in the field first after the hosts won the toss and elected to bat. Karan Sheth top-scored with an aggressive 78 off 77 balls, including ten fours and two sixes, and shared a 52-run opening partnership with Vishal Gupta (20) before adding 89 for the third wicket with Rishabh Singh (45). Sudhir Kothem then provided fireworks lower down, smashing 48 from just 35 deliveries with four sixes, as Checkendon piled up 252 all out from 41.5 overs.

On the bowling front, Reyansh Setia was the pick of the Sonning attack with 3-24 from five overs, while Max Murphy (2-37 from nine), Aseem Shafi (2-36), and Tarun Raj Ponsingh (2-60) all chipped in with wickets. Elias Haidari completed the clean-up with 1-3 from 0.5 overs. Despite bowling Checkendon out, the damage had been done through those middle-order contributions.

The chase began poorly, with wickets falling at regular intervals, and Sonning found themselves in deep trouble before Max Murphy and Aditya Kumar came together. The pair put on a vital 78 for the sixth wicket — the only partnership of real substance in the innings. Murphy top-scored with a battling 60 from 97 balls, hitting nine fours, while Kumar contributed a handy 31 off 36. Once both were dismissed, however, the lower order could not sustain the effort, and Sonning closed on 175-9 from their 45 overs, falling 77 runs short. Sudhir Kothem added 3-23 with the ball to his earlier batting exploits, while Kunal Mendiratta was miserly with 2-10 from seven overs including three maidens.

Sunday As — Sonning lost to Prestcold by 6 wickets (Home, Friendly)

Sunday's friendly at Coppid Hall against Prestcold offered promise early on before slipping away. After Prestcold won the toss and inserted Sonning, Richard Skeil and Naqash Tahir put on a superb opening partnership of 93, giving the hosts a flying start. Tahir was the star with a fluent 72 from 81 balls, hitting seven fours and two sixes, while captain Skeil matched him with an attractive 62 off 73, featuring nine fours and a six.

Unfortunately, the innings collapsed spectacularly once the openers were parted. From 93-0, Sonning crumbled to 165 all out in 36.5 overs, losing their last ten wickets for just 72 runs. No other batsman reached double figures aside from Nischal Tiwari, who struck a brief 13 off eight balls. Kieran Exley did the bulk of the damage for Prestcold with 3-34 from 6.5 overs, supported by Jonny Gingell (2-18).

In reply, Prestcold knocked off the target with relative comfort, reaching 166-4 in 29.5 overs. Exley continued his fine all-round day with 44 off 60 balls, before Andrew Towse (31 not out) and James Prior (26 not out) steered the visitors home. Robert Jones was the most effective Sonning bowler with 2-30 from eight overs, while Abdul Haadi Naqash took 2-50 from five.

Sonning will look to bounce back next weekend, with the 1st XI's impressive away victory at Marlow a platform to build on as the season progresses. The lower sides will be keen to convert some of their individual performances — particularly with the bat — into winning results.
