Senior Roundup: A Frustrating Weekend for Sonning as Victories Prove Elusive
Senior Roundup: A Frustrating Weekend for Sonning as Victories Prove Elusive
It was a chastening weekend across the board for Sonning Cricket Club, with none of the four senior sides managing a win. The 1st XI and 2nd XI both had to settle for draws in their respective league fixtures, while the 3rd XI and 4th XI suffered defeats. The Sunday 1s also came up short in a high-scoring friendly against Stonor, meaning Sonning go into next week searching for a return to winning ways.
1st XI vs Finchampstead — Draw (Division 1B, Home)
Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss at King George's Field and elected to bat, a decision that looked justified as Mohammed Zahid produced a classy innings of 83 from 116 balls, striking 11 fours and a six to anchor the Sonning first innings. After Muhammad Ayub fell for a brisk 14, Zahid and Alex Mcloughlin added 45 for the second wicket before Mcloughlin was caught for 21. Zahid then combined with Dhruv Peshkar in a partnership worth 64 for the fourth wicket, with Peshkar contributing a fluent 33 from 41 balls. A middle-order wobble saw Amaad Ali (1) and Jacob Fitton (0) depart cheaply, but Shenul Widanapathirana steadied things with an unbeaten 29 as Sonning posted 202-8 from their 52 overs. Paul Stephens (3-64) and Kailan Patel (3-47) did the bulk of the damage for Finchampstead.
In reply, the visitors made a positive start through Matthew Eldridge (23 off 23 balls) and Aryan Gavankar (19), who put on 40 for the opening wicket. Connor Rees kept Finchampstead in the hunt with 39, but regular wickets kept Sonning in the contest. Damario Goodman was the standout bowler with outstanding figures of 4-34 from 15 overs, while Zahid backed up his batting heroics with 3-59 from 14. Louis Crerar offered stubborn resistance with 46, but when he fell to Goodman the chase was all but over. Finchampstead closed on 182-8 from 48 overs, falling 20 runs short but surviving to earn a draw — a result that will leave Sonning frustrated having been within touching distance of victory.
2nd XI vs Wargrave — Draw (Division 4B, Away)
Dan Anderson won the toss at Kings Field and inserted Wargrave, but it proved a long day in the field as the home side's captain Peter Dean produced a magnificent unbeaten 121 from 154 balls, lacing 15 fours and a six. Dean was the backbone of the innings, putting on 61 for the second wicket with Hardik Dhallam (30) before a devastating stand of 153 with Calvin Freese (71) for the third wicket that put the game beyond Sonning's reach. Max Murphy was the lone bright spot with the ball, claiming 4-59 from his 12 overs, while Indeveer Sahota chipped in with 1-27. Wargrave declared on 254-5 from 52 overs, setting a daunting target.
Sonning's reply was steady but never looked like threatening the total. Sahota (28) and Duncan Parr (21) got the innings off to a decent start with a 38-run opening partnership, but the loss of Parr, Anderson (2) and Raoul Harding (2) in quick succession left Sonning in trouble. Robert Jones (39) and David Coutts, who batted with real composure for an unbeaten 43 from 89 balls, rebuilt with a 44-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Henry Cook provided some late fireworks with a quickfire 19 including three fours and a six, adding 42 with Coutts for the sixth wicket, and Murphy weighed in with an unbeaten 19 to ensure the draw was secured at 185-6 from 48 overs. Jegannathan Srinivasan's 3-30 from 10 overs was the pick of the Wargrave bowling.
3rd XI vs Hampstead Norreys — Lost (Division 7A, Home)
The 3rd XI endured a difficult afternoon at Knowl Hill, bowled out for 121 before Hampstead Norreys raced to victory in just 12.1 overs. After losing the toss and being asked to bat, Sonning struggled against a disciplined bowling attack, with Vinoth Palanisamy (2-10 from 4 overs) and Ankush Jain (2-16 from 6.5 overs) causing problems at the top. Wickets fell at regular intervals, and at various stages the innings looked in danger of complete collapse.
Shamitha Widanapathirana was the one batsman to show sustained resistance, carrying his bat for an excellent unbeaten 44 from 77 balls, hitting seven fours. His 40-run partnership with Ollie Terry (8) for the eighth wicket provided some late respectability to the total. Ethan Towner contributed 14 lower down, but no other batsman passed 15 as Sonning were dismissed for 121 in 37.5 overs, Naykesh Kolpe (2-28) also impressing for the visitors.
The chase was brutal in its efficiency. After Sonning picked up two early wickets — Ollie Terry removing Philbert Mathew for 1 and Ethan Towner trapping Bharathi Babu lbw for 6 — Amanpreet Singh (54 not out from 31 balls, with three fours and five sixes) and Keerthi Ramegowda (52 not out from 36, with six fours and three sixes) put on an unbroken partnership that tore the Sonning attack apart. The pair smashed the remaining runs in devastating fashion, Hampstead Norreys reaching 124-2 from just 12.1 overs to complete a comprehensive victory.
4th XI vs Crowthorne & Crown Wood — Lost by 49 runs (Division 9C, Home)
At Yateley Manor School, Crowthorne & Crown Wood won the toss and batted first, posting a challenging 231-8 from their 40 overs. Daniel Manning led the way with 67 from 88 balls, and together with Andrew Amor (37) put on a match-defining stand of 96 for the second wicket after Ateeq Mirza (26) had helped set the platform with a 57-run opening partnership. Jake Gibbings blazed 20 from just 9 balls to accelerate the scoring in the middle overs. Geethika Jyothis was Sonning's most impressive bowler, returning excellent figures of 3-21 from 8 overs including a maiden, while Neel Kumar (2-34) and Siddharth Kumar (2-53) also claimed wickets.
In reply, Sonning's 4th XI were given hope by a superb opening stand of 120 between Gaurav Jayan and Dhiren Panchal. Jayan struck 61 from 86 balls with nine fours, while Panchal was equally impressive with 54 from 75 balls, including six fours and a six. However, once the partnership was broken the innings fell away dramatically. Hugo Popplewell departed for a golden duck, and despite contributions from Siddharth Kumar (20 not out) and Harrison Lott (13), no other batsman could build a significant innings. Captain Arun Raghavendra was caught for a duck, and Sonning ultimately closed on 182-7 from their 40 overs, falling 49 runs short. Mike Storey (3-21) and William Amor (2-36) were the chief destroyers for Crowthorne.
Sunday 1s vs Stonor — Lost by 7 wickets (Friendly, Home)
A glorious batting display from Robert Jones, who smashed a magnificent century, was not enough to prevent defeat in an entertaining friendly at Knowl Hill. Captain Richard Skeil set the tone by winning the toss and batting, opening with Aahaan Sharma and racing to 52 from 43 balls with seven fours and two sixes before being caught. Jones then took centre stage, blazing 101 from just 67 deliveries with 13 fours and four sixes in a truly commanding knock. He retired not out, having put on a sparkling 76-run partnership with Neil Jasti (34) for the fourth wicket. Sonning posted a competitive 219-4 from their 35 overs.
However, Stonor's reply was even more clinical. Will Symons (85 from 110 balls) and Niru (82 from 69 balls, with 11 fours and two sixes) produced a stunning opening stand of 178 that effectively decided the contest. Despite Jones picking up 2-19 from 3.2 overs and Aahaan Sharma claiming 1-29, the Sonning bowling struggled to make inroads against two set batsmen. Stonor reached their target of 221-3 in 34.2 overs, winning by seven wickets in a match that showcased some outstanding strokeplay from both sides.
With a winless weekend behind them, Sonning will be eager to regroup and find their best form when they return to action next Saturday across all four league sides.
