Cook's Fireworks and Jones's Near-Miss Highlight Weekend of High Scores Despite Sonning Setbacks

Cook's Fireworks and Jones's Near-Miss Highlight Weekend of High Scores Despite Sonning Setbacks

It was a weekend of big individual performances but frustrating collective outcomes for Sonning, with all four Saturday sides and the Sunday team unable to secure a victory. Henry Cook's blistering unbeaten 61 from just 40 balls and Robert Jones's superb 93 powered the 2nd XI to an imposing 305 but couldn't force a win, while Waqas Tahir struck a fine 73 for the Sunday 1s and Damario Goodman delivered an outstanding spell of 3-35 from 15 overs for the 1st XI in a gutsy bowling display at Wokingham.

1st XI — Sonning 136 all out lost to Wokingham 211-9 by 75 runs (Division 1B)

Sonning's top flight side travelled to Wokingham's Wellington Oval and, after losing the toss, were asked to bowl first on what looked a decent surface. The visitors acquitted themselves well in the field, with Damario Goodman the standout performer, delivering a magnificent 15-over spell that yielded 3-35 with three maidens. Captain Peter Higginbottom chipped in with 2-22 from seven overs, while Danyal Ghazi claimed 2-51, as Wokingham were restricted to 211-9 from their 50 overs despite a dominant 115 from Matthew Keast, who anchored the home innings almost single-handedly.

The chase, however, never truly got going. The top order crumbled against disciplined bowling from Anthony Clapham (2-15) and Daniel Longridge (3-44), and Sonning slumped to a precarious position after losing early wickets cheaply. Mohammed Zahid top-scored with a battling 37 from 48 balls, adding 36 for the third wicket with Muhammad Ayub (15). A late cameo of 29 from 21 balls by Danyal Ghazi, featuring three fours and two sixes, provided entertainment but came too late to change the outcome, as Sonning were bowled out for 136 in 37.1 overs.

2nd XI — Sonning 305-6 drew with Hillingdon Manor 231-4 (Division 4B)

The 2nd XI produced by far the most commanding batting display of the weekend at King George's Field, but were left frustrated as Hillingdon Manor batted out for the draw. Captain Dan Anderson won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that was handsomely vindicated as Sonning piled up 305-6 from 52 overs.

The innings was built on a magnificent third-wicket partnership of 128 between Anderson and Robert Jones. Anderson struck a composed half-century, making 50 from 74 balls with eight fours before falling lbw, while Jones was in imperious form, smashing 12 fours in a 102-ball innings of 93 before being caught just seven runs short of a richly deserved century. Gaurav Jayan contributed a brisk 33 from 37 balls at the top of the order. The real fireworks came late, though, as wicketkeeper Henry Cook blazed an unbeaten 61 from just 40 deliveries — his innings laced with seven fours and two sixes — while Edward McLoughlin clubbed 25 not out from 18 balls, including two sixes, as the pair put on a rapid unbroken seventh-wicket stand.

In reply, Hillingdon Manor never seriously threatened to chase the target but batted sensibly to secure the draw, reaching 231-4 from 48 overs. Harppal Singh struck 81 from 95 balls and Ryan Aujla made an unbeaten 64, the pair adding 76 for the fourth wicket. Ghulam Abbas was the pick of the Sonning bowlers with 2-32 from seven overs, while Max Murphy (1-39) and Duncan Parr (1-36) also claimed wickets, but with six bowlers going wicketless, the breakthroughs proved too infrequent.

3rd XI — Sonning 173 all out lost to Sulhamstead & Ufton 174-3 by 7 wickets (Division 7A)

Away at The Railway Ground, the 3rd XI were put into bat after Sulhamstead & Ufton won the toss and inserted them on a tricky surface. Kavya Panchal was the clear standout, playing a superb lone hand of 65 from 84 balls, featuring nine fours and two sixes, in an innings that held the card together. Panchal shared useful partnerships with Dhiren Panchal (13) for the first wicket, putting on 40, and then a crucial 52 for the third wicket with Akash Vasa (17).

However, regular wickets at the other end undermined the effort. Christopher Dowse contributed a useful 25 from 33 balls lower down, but once Kavya Panchal was stumped, the innings folded quickly as Shiva Rao ripped through the tail, finishing with 3-11 from 3.3 overs. Ian Gibson also impressed with 3-36 from nine overs for the hosts. Sonning were bowled out for 173 in 42.3 overs, a total that proved well short.

Sulhamstead & Ufton's reply was emphatic. Jason Doole anchored the chase with an unbeaten 71 from 92 balls, sharing a 69-run second-wicket stand with Julian Fernando (27). Mohit Karangad was the only Sonning bowler to make inroads, finishing with 2-39 from seven overs, but the hosts cantered to 174-3 in just 29.2 overs to win by seven wickets.

4th XI — Eversley 313-1 beat Sonning 255-5 by 58 runs (Division 9C)

This contest at Yateley Manor School produced a remarkable 568 runs across the two innings but was ultimately dominated by an extraordinary Eversley batting performance. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the hosts lost Muhammad Aziz cheaply — caught off Isaac Blakey (1-49) — but from that point on, the Sonning bowlers were made to toil.

Jonah Devanand (113 not out from 109 balls, 20 fours) and Oscar Tarry (144 not out from 130 balls, 26 fours) put on an unbroken second-wicket partnership of 279, plundering runs all around the ground as Eversley racked up a colossal 313-1 from their 40 overs. Captain Neel Kumar's eight overs for 49 were the most economical of the Sonning attack, but none of the seven bowlers used could stem the flow.

Chasing 314, Sonning showed admirable spirit rather than rolling over. Shreyas Koppole led the way with an excellent 62 from 50 balls, striking seven fours and a six, and sharing a 75-run second-wicket stand with Matthew Dawes (34). Arun Raghavendra was equally impressive, finishing unbeaten on 58 from 55 balls, while Yusuf Malik (30 not out) and Neel Kumar (30) all contributed as the 4th XI reached a very creditable 255-5 from their 40 overs. Tony Critchley's 3-36 from eight overs was the best of the Eversley bowling, but the target was always beyond reach.

Sunday 1s — Sonning 274 all out lost to Hartley Wintney 278-2 by 8 wickets

The Sunday side headed to Hartley Wintney and, after winning the toss and choosing to bat, posted an impressive 274 — only for the hosts to chase it down in devastating fashion. Waqas Tahir was the star of the Sonning innings, striking a superb 73 from 72 balls with 12 fours and two sixes. He shared a pivotal 110-run second-wicket stand with Robert Jones, who blazed 62 from just 41 deliveries, crashing 13 fours in a breathtaking display of stroke-play.

When both fell, contributions came from throughout the order. Mohit Karangad made a composed 22, Edward Duvall struck a punchy unbeaten 32 from 27 balls with two sixes, and Alastair Parkes smashed 27 from just 15 deliveries before being run out. Ali Jalil was the pick of the Hartley Wintney attack, claiming 4-29 from eight disciplined overs.

The reply, however, was utterly brutal. Zishan Hussain (104 from 56 balls, 10 fours and eight sixes) and Malik Abbas (104 from 67 balls, eight fours and nine sixes) both struck stunning centuries, sharing in a partnership that effectively decided the match before either retired not out. The Sonning bowlers had no answer, and despite Mohit Karangad picking up 2-19 from 3.2 overs late on, Hartley Wintney cruised to 278-2 in just 29.2 overs.

A weekend of impressive individual performances with the bat — particularly from Cook, Jones, Tahir, and Koppole — and Goodman's fine spell with the ball gives Sonning plenty to build on heading into next Saturday, where the focus will be on converting these contributions into the wins they deserve.
