Ayub's Defiant 82 and Goodman's Four-Wicket Burst Give Sonning Hope in Narrow Beaconsfield Defeat

It was a winless weekend for Sonning Cricket Club, with all four senior sides going down across Saturday and Sunday. Yet amid the disappointment there were individual performances of real quality. Muhammad Ayub struck a commanding 82 for the 1st XI in a tight contest at Beaconsfield, while Damario Goodman claimed 4-47 to give Sonning every chance of defending a modest total. Elsewhere, Akash Vasa hit 65 for the 3rd XI, Lochie Christopherson's unbeaten century proved too much for the 2nd XI, and the Sunday 1s fell just short in an entertaining friendly at Knowl Hill.

1st XI — Sonning 164 all out (45.3 overs) lost to Beaconsfield 165-8 (41 overs) | Division 1B

Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and chose to bat at Beaconsfield, but early wickets left Sonning in trouble. Alex Mcloughlin fell for 3 and Higginbottom himself managed only 9 before being caught, leaving the visitors 17-2. Mohammed Zahid steadied things with 32 from 63 balls, putting on 39 for the third wicket with Muhammad Ayub before being bowled.

From that point, Ayub took centre stage. He compiled a superb 82 from 94 deliveries, striking nine fours and three sixes in an innings that almost single-handedly gave Sonning a competitive total. A 48-run stand with wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar (11) for the fourth wicket and a further 43 with Xavier Yarde (4) for the seventh kept the scoreboard ticking. But when Ayub was caught — one of four victims for Harry Taylor, who finished with outstanding figures of 4-21 from 7.3 overs — the innings folded quickly, with Montgomery Evans chipping in with 3-23.

Defending 164, Sonning made an excellent start through the bowling of Damario Goodman, who was exceptional throughout his 15-over spell. He removed four of the top seven batsmen to finish with 4-47, while Mohammed Zahid (1-32) and Higginbottom (2-39) also struck. At 111-7, Sonning sensed an upset, but a crucial unbroken 54-run partnership between Harry Taylor (39) and David Justus (23) steadied the chase and carried Beaconsfield home with two wickets in hand. Alex Lloyd Taylor's aggressive 40 from 41 balls at the top had earlier given the hosts the platform they needed.

2nd XI — Sonning 223 all out (51 overs) lost to Penn & Tylers Green 227-3 (35.5 overs) | Division 4B

Dan Anderson won the toss and elected to bat at King George's Field, and contributions throughout the order helped Sonning to a respectable 223. Anderson himself top-scored with a patient 35 from 67 balls at the top, while Edward McLoughlin provided the fireworks lower down with a quickfire 31 from just 21 deliveries, including five fours and a six. Jameel Ahamed made 30, John Rimmer struck an entertaining 29 off 25 balls, and Gaurav Jayan (23) and Ethan Towner (20 not out) all weighed in. A 50-run partnership between McLoughlin and Ahamed for the fifth wicket was the standout stand. Raunak Biswas was the pick of the Penn & Tylers Green attack with 5-75 from 15 overs.

What looked a competitive total was ruthlessly dismantled in the chase. Jack Lloyd (28 off 24 balls) and Paul Boyle (37 off 44) put on 53 for the opening wicket before both were dismissed, while Raunak Biswas contributed a patient 3 before being bowled. But Lochie Christopherson produced a devastating unbeaten 102 from just 59 balls, smashing 18 fours and a six, and an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership with Dylan Yatigammana (46 not out) saw the visitors cruise home in under 36 overs. Duncan Parr (1-41), Jameel Ahamed (1-44) and Geethika Jyothis (1-31) picked up the three wickets, but the Sonning bowlers had no answer to Christopherson's onslaught. Seven bowlers were used as Anderson searched in vain for a breakthrough.

3rd XI — Eversley 274-6 (45 overs) beat Sonning 203-9 (45 overs) | Division 7A

Travelling to Fox Lane, Sonning were put into the field after Eversley won the toss. Captain Sam Taylor was the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, returning 2-28 from his nine overs with three maidens, while Aahaan Sharma (2-50) and Akash Vasa (2-62) also claimed two wickets apiece. However, Julian Cummings anchored the Eversley innings superbly with an unbeaten 84 from 88 balls, putting on 60 for the third wicket with Kumaran Chandrababu (34) and 57 for the fourth with captain Vijay Nawale (29). A late cameo of 31 not out from Eyan Sen pushed the total to a daunting 274-6.

In reply, Sonning's chase stuttered early as Elliot Dawes (13) and Shreyas Koppole (2) both fell cheaply. A vital 70-run third-wicket partnership between Kyle Dellar-Law and Paul Towner revived the innings, with Towner making 24 and Dellar-Law a composed 47 including four fours and two sixes. When both fell, the middle order collapsed and Sonning slumped to 138-8. Akash Vasa then produced a superb counter-attacking 65 from 65 balls, hitting ten fours and sharing a defiant 65-run ninth-wicket stand with Shahbaz Ali (25 not out). Elay Sen's 4-31 from nine overs was the decisive bowling performance for the hosts, well supported by Colin Webb's 2-38. Vasa's dismissal effectively ended the contest, with Sonning closing on 203-9, 71 runs short.

Sunday 1s — Sonning 191 all out (33.1 overs) lost to Wealdstone Corinthians 193-7 (38.3 overs) | Friendly

In Sunday's friendly at Knowl Hill, Wealdstone Corinthians won the toss and inserted Sonning. Richard Skeil (23) and Alex Mcloughlin (24, including two sixes) got the innings off to a brisk start with a 44-run opening partnership. Robert Jones was the top scorer with an attractive 39 from 41 balls, studded with seven fours, and his 49-run fourth-wicket stand with Bharat Rathod (10) was the biggest of the innings. Neil Jasti added a punchy 23 from 16 balls, but Shivam Dhangdharia's 5-26 from six overs tore through the lower order and Sonning were dismissed for 191 inside 34 overs.

Kishan Akula gave Sonning early encouragement with 3-35 from his six overs, while Neil Jasti claimed 2-24 and Isaac Jenner took 1-33. However, a dominant 92-run second-wicket partnership between Dipen Patel (53) and David Redhead (49) put the visitors in control. Although Sonning continued to take wickets at regular intervals, Steve Brown's unbeaten 19 from 47 balls guided Wealdstone home with two runs to spare and three wickets remaining.

With a challenging weekend behind them, Sonning will be looking to regroup and return to winning ways across all sides next Saturday.
