Astwood's Stunning 155 Not Out Powers Fourth XI to Emphatic 200-Run Victory

It was a weekend of contrasting fortunes for Sonning Cricket Club, with three Saturday defeats offset by a magnificent individual performance from Charles Astwood, whose unbeaten 155 guided the 4th XI to a commanding win over Yateley. Elsewhere, Damario Goodman continued his outstanding season with four wickets for the 1st XI, Mohammed Zahid struck a fluent 61 in the chase, and Jacob Fitton top-scored with 62 in Sunday's friendly, but victories proved elusive for the other sides as Sonning came up just short in several contests.

1st XI vs High Wycombe (Home) — Division 1B

Sonning's 1st XI suffered a six-wicket defeat at King George's Field despite a spirited bowling display and a valiant run chase against High Wycombe's 2nd XI. Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and elected to field, and Damario Goodman responded with a superb spell of 4-17 from his ten overs, including two maidens. Mohammed Zahid chipped in with 2-45 as Sonning restricted the visitors, but a damaging 162-run stand between Rohan Shukla (75 off 129 balls) and Shane Wijeyasinghe (75 off 96) for the third wicket proved the backbone of High Wycombe's 246-7.

In reply, Sonning needed steady accumulation but lost early wickets before Alex Mcloughlin (45 off 74 balls, six fours) and Muhammad Ayub (35) combined for a 55-run third-wicket partnership to keep the chase alive. When both fell, Zahid took centre stage with a counter-attacking 61 off 54 deliveries, striking seven fours and a six. He found useful support from Max Murphy (14) in a 34-run seventh-wicket stand and Higginbottom (11) in a 32-run eighth-wicket partnership, but S D Coker's five-wicket haul for the visitors ultimately proved too much. Danyal Ghazi's unbeaten 20 off 12 balls added late impetus, but Sonning finished on 240-9, falling six runs short of their target.

2nd XI vs High Wycombe (Away) — Division 4B

The 2nd XI endured a difficult afternoon at Princes Risborough, losing by seven wickets after posting 192 all out. Captain Raoul Harding won the toss and opted to bat, and Sonning made a promising start as David Coutts and Gaurav Jayan put on 44 for the opening wicket. Jayan struck six fours in his 30 off 41 balls before falling caught, and after Akash Vasa departed for 10, Indeveer Sahota took control with an excellent 61 off 63 deliveries, peppering the boundary with twelve fours. He shared a productive 53-run fourth-wicket stand with Mohit Karangad (16), while Harding added a breezy 23 off 21 balls, launching three sixes.

However, the innings subsided from 167-4 as Chris Russell's 3-11 from 6.1 overs tore through the lower order. High Wycombe's reply was devastatingly efficient: Harikrishnan Balakrishnan blazed 72 off just 31 balls, smashing twelve fours and three sixes, as he and Russell (34) put on 92 for the first wicket. Wasim Amin claimed both his wickets — 2-59 from eight overs — and Jack Durrant picked up one, but with O U Sarwar (32 not out) and J Foxley (16 not out) finishing the job, High Wycombe raced to 195-3 in only 23.2 overs.

3rd XI vs Woodley (Home) — Division 7A

Sonning's 3rd XI posted an imposing 249-6 at Knowl Hill but were unable to defend the total as Woodley chased it down with five wickets in hand. Batting first after winning the toss, captain Sam Taylor saw his side build a platform through a 65-run opening stand between Elliot Dawes (44 off 77 balls) and Aashmit Ghosh (45 off 46, eight fours), promoted to open. Matthew Dawes (12) helped add 34 for the second wicket, but it was Kyle Dellar-Law who provided the fireworks, smashing a brilliant 66 off just 44 balls with seven fours and four sixes. He shared a 56-run fifth-wicket partnership with Christopher Dowse (11) and a 42-run sixth-wicket stand with Ollie Terry (23 not out) as Sonning accelerated through the latter overs.

The defence, however, was undone by a magnificent 166-run second-wicket partnership between Pranav Desai and Sumanth Hathwar. Desai struck a commanding 110 off 83 balls, lacing 21 fours, while Hathwar contributed 56 off 56 with five fours and two sixes. Shahbaz Ali was Sonning's standout bowler, claiming 4-45 from 6.5 overs, including the key wickets of Hathwar and Bhargava Vasu, but Woodley reached 250-5 in 31.5 overs. Taylor took 1-78 from his nine overs, while Ghosh bowled tidily for 0-19 from four overs with a maiden, though it was not enough to stem the tide.

4th XI vs Yateley (Home) — Division 9C

The 4th XI delivered the weekend's standout performance, demolishing Yateley by 200 runs at home in a match utterly dominated by Charles Astwood's extraordinary unbeaten 155. After Yateley won the toss and inserted Sonning, Alastair Driver (4) and Dhiren Panchal (26, six fours) helped Astwood settle in, the pair putting on 58 for the second wicket. When Bharat Rathod fell cheaply for 3, captain Arun Raghavendra joined Astwood for a breathtaking 208-run fourth-wicket stand that broke the game wide open.

Raghavendra was outstanding in his own right, crashing 86 off 71 balls with seventeen fours, but Astwood was simply unstoppable. His 155 not out came from 126 deliveries, including a remarkable 29 fours and a six, as Sonning piled up 322-4 from their 40 overs. The Yateley attack had no answers, with none of their seven bowlers conceding fewer than four runs an over.

The reply never threatened. Rish Bajpai struck early with 2-17 from 6.2 overs, Pranoy Ramankandath removed two more for 21, and Neel Kumar was outstanding with 2-15 from eight overs including three maidens. Siddharth Kumar added 3-22 from five overs as Yateley were bundled out for 122 in 29.2 overs. Only Srikanth Chowdary (25) and Jez Daines (21) offered meaningful resistance in a comprehensive Sonning victory.

Sunday 1s vs Binfield (Home) — Friendly

Sonning's Sunday side fell to a narrow four-wicket defeat against Binfield at King George's Field despite a fine half-century from Jacob Fitton. Captain Richard Skeil won the toss and batted, but Sonning stuttered early before Fitton anchored the innings superbly with 62 off 84 balls, hitting nine fours. He shared a crucial 84-run fourth-wicket partnership with Kishan Akula, who struck a brisk 36 off 39 balls with seven fours, as Sonning recovered to a competitive position.

Robert Jones (20 off 14) and Neil Jasti (22 off 25) both made useful contributions, while Skeil hit a quickfire 11 off 8 balls including a six, but Ollie Braiser's 3-24 from seven overs kept Sonning in check and they were bowled out for 193 in 36 overs. In reply, Binfield lost early wickets as Fitton backed up his batting with 2-18 from six tidy overs, but Will Kings anchored the chase with an unbeaten 62 off 76 balls. Carter Daines (26), Mat Kings (23) and Jacob Whiddett (23) all contributed as Binfield reached 197-6 in 35.2 overs to seal the win.

A tough weekend overall with just one win from four results, but Astwood's remarkable century and a half will live long in the memory. Sonning will look to carry the 4th XI's confidence into next Saturday as all sides seek to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
