Our junior section is thriving and we promote cricket for all in a friendly and enjoyable environment where all children have an opportunity to take part in the game, developing new skills irrespective of their starting ability. In addition to our junior section, where boys and girls play in mixed games, we currently offer girls-only (Stingers) cricket. We are excited to announce girls-only Hardball cricket for the 2024 Season. This comes in addition to the current girls only Softball cricket that Sonning Cricket has been offering for the last few seasons.
To introduce girls to cricket, we offer girls-only soft-ball cricket in ‘pairs’ format games; soft-ball cricket comes without the requirement to acquire specialised kit. Soft ball cricket offers a ‘pairs’ format of the game that affords itself to those looking to give the game a try without the complication of lots of kit and rules. A team sport, soft ball cricket encourages teamwork but most essentially is centred on fun and engagement – a sport for all abilities – this may lead to a move into hard ball cricket, but we are totally committed to this format of the game for the long term.
Due to training and experience, some girls have joined our mixed teams (through the junior section) for hardball games; all girls registered for mixed cricket will also be offered participation in our girls-only games. Our U13 team will have hard-ball fixtures integrated within the structure of the league. It is also our plan to have an Under 15 hard-ball girl’s team in 2024. We will also seek to secure other hard-ball opportunities for other age groups, as required.
Our girls-only softball training will continue to take place on Tuesday’s at King George’s Field in Sonning. Hardball training will be on friday nights within the usual mixed age group trainings
Following our successful integration into the Berkshire Youth Girl’s Cricket League, we will continue to offer pairs soft-ball girls-only cricket. We will also offer girls only hard-ball fixtures, and Mixed fixtures for girls will continue in 2024

We are an entirely volunteer-run club with all funds being used to support the cricket. This isn’t possible without parental support and if you are considering our cricket for your daughter, feel free to get involved too. As an inclusive team sport, cricket encourages teamwork and is centred on fun and engagement – a sport for all. Sonning CC is totally committed to both soft-ball and hard-ball.
